I don't think the fanwork exists that is universally considered to be flawless. There are always going to be critics. My question is, how do we deal with that? How hard do you find it to accept criticism? Do you find it easier to take if the criticism is directed to you or if you encounter it as a discussion between other people? Has criticism ever led you to make a permanent or long-term change in your behaviour/style/output?
Have you ever been particularly grateful for some constructive criticism? And, conversely, have you ever been on the receiving end of some pretty hateful flaming? How exactly would you define the difference between a negative response and flaming? Tell me your horror stories and inspirational tales regarding critical response to your work.
From another angle, what, if anything, would provoke you to leave a critical response to someone's fanwork? Is it an attempt to motivate the author/artist to improve or simply an acceptable response to any fanwork posted in a public forum? Do you feel you need an invitation from the author/artist to give concrit? Would you hold back if there was no invitation? And would you post it publically or send it as a PM/email? Is there are situation where you feel criticism, even constructtive, isn't appropriate?
