The myriad solstice-associated holidays bring, among other things, presents! What better way to spread some cheer than podfic? :D
Posting for the
Fall Fandom Free-For-All has been completed, and many generous folks shared podfic (thanks everybody!). Go, mine the posts - you'll find some gems. Here's an example:
"it's not the years, it's the mileage" by
deirdre_c, read by the wonderful
tsuki_no_bara. Download the mp3 and leave comments for the reader
here. Gen, SPN x Indiana Jones crossover, 4 minutes long (my love for this little fic is inversely proportional to its length!).
There's a new com,
podfic_request, where you can suggest someone create a podfic and, if you want, offer a bribe encouragement. This approach doesn't bring in the pressure (or potential guilt) of a deadline or gift exchange, which will make it a nice fit for some people, and it's a place to look for ideas if you're deciding what you'd like to record. Requests can be specific or general, and can be part of a theme or not. The current theme is
Fall and Winter Holidays.
Podbang, the challenge run by
amplificathon, was a December gift exchange in 2009 and 2010. It encouraged people to record long podfic, usually from one of the big bangs, so really it was a gift for all of us! On the amplificathon com, follow the tags "podbang:2009" and "podbang:2010" and scan for SPN posts. It's a gold mine.
Signups opened December 10th for the
podficbigbang, wherein readers (along with cover artists) produce podfic at least 1hr long. Posting is in June. Looking forward to it!
spn-j2-xmas is a secret santa fic, art, and vid exchange. Podficcing isn't on that list (I feel a suggestion coming on…) but that hasn't stopped intrepid readers in the past. Just glancing at previous years' posts I see close to 20 fics that evolved into great podfics.
Despite the com name, these are not generally christmas-oriented stories. A notable exception is Some Wishes are Worth Waiting For by
runedgirl, delightfully read by
emerald_embers. Sam and Dean are plunked into full-on christmas traditions, right at the intersection of naughty and nice. There's also an interesting outsider POV. Sam/Dean, NC-17, 40 minutes.

And a few more recs:
Silent Night by
ratherastory, read by euphoric_aria (aka
elsewhere_kels). While Sam is on an eggnog run, a group of kids sing carols to Dean, who's deaf in this story. Gen, PG, 20 min. Well written and performed.

m4b. Leave comments for the reader

Ring Them Bells, 4th part of
technosage's Break Loose Ranch series. Jared runs a dude ranch and has mind-meltingly hot sex with Jensen. (The series is beautifully written, despite my succinct summary.) Read by
Juice817 with unparalleled talent.
Jared/Jensen; mention of other pairings. NC-17. 3.5hrs (parts 1-5).
Text,
m4b of the series,
mp3 for just this part (you can jump in at part 4--everything's pretty much explained in context). Please leave comments for the reader
here.
I was surprised to realize that most of the podfics in my first
spnroundtable recs post have great solstice-adjacent holiday scenes: So Close to My Heart, There's a Piece of a Puzzle Known as Life, and Old Country. All links
here.
Finally, join me in a happydance in honor of
applegeuse's A Very Supernatural Christmas: Collection of Holiday Podfics. I love this for so many reasons, one of which is the inclusion of many short holiday ficlets by
longsufferingly and other favorite authors. There are 27 fics, and
applegeuse gives a variety of download options
here, which is also the place to tell her a giant THANK YOU.
If you've listened to and enjoyed a podfic, recently or in the past, it would give the reader a warm fuzzy feeling if you take a minute to let them know - give the gift of feedback! :)
Happy holidays (or December in general) everybody!!!
