A/N: This is the sequel to I Will Love You 'til My Muzzle Turns Grey - it's been rattling around my head since I finished the first one. I know there's a few of you out there who've been waiting patiently for it, and I hope it's worth the wait. Thank you so much for sticking with me as I try to become a better writer (and venture into the smuttier end of the pool once again). Endless thanks to my amazing friend and patient beta TMATEOTB for all the hard work, awesome suggestions and endless support. To my sweet artistic friend
denig37 - I miss you brainmate, I feel naked here without you.

Jensen sat behind Christian in the big Yukon, Connor and Murphy occupying the passenger-side seats. Christian's sharp blue eyes were alert for any sign of trouble as they sailed through the early morning traffic toward the meeting site. Connor was on his phone, handling last minute arrangements with the local pack's security while Murph took one final look at the building layout on the laptop. Jensen's green eyes were closed, dozing as he allowed his tired mind to wander into familiar territory.
In the six months since Jared moved in with Jensen, there had been a lot of changes for both men.
Jared had grown very accustomed to living alone, coming and going as he pleased. He knew Jensen had needed extra security in his house while they had been apart, Jensen's strength and ability to effectively lead his pack had been in question with certain other Alphas. Most other pack leaders could be trusted to follow proper procedures when challenging another, but there was always the threat of those who were a bit more "relaxed" when it came to protocol.
Like driving another Alpha's vehicle off the road and ambushing them while they are down.
Jared had thought with Ted gone, they would be able to relax their guard some and try to get back to some semblance of normal.
Jared had finally asked one day why they still had so much security around. For the briefest of seconds, Jensen had considered lying to him so he would not feel guilty or pressured, but he knew he could never do that to Jared.
No lies, not even to protect him.
Jared had been pissed that Jensen was under fire again because of him, but Jensen had finally managed to calm him. The embattled Alpha smirked at the memory of kissing Jared until he was too dazed to remember why he'd been so upset.
Jensen had also lived alone before Jared moved in, except for the retinue of guards that had become ever-present in his life. They were all well-trained and exceptional at fading into the background. Like living, breathing shadows on the wall - they were there if he should need them and well out of the way if he didn't. Except Jared wasn't exactly sure how to go about blocking them out of his awareness.
And it wasn't that Jensen minded keeping Jared apprised of his comings and goings, he just wasn't used to doing it. When a call came in that a pack member needed him somewhere, no matter what time of day or night he was up and out the door to help before he could even think about it. Jensen had left a couple of times and had forgotten to tell Jared he was leaving. After Jared had called and asked him drily if he had run off with the Pomeranian down the street, Jensen had promised it wouldn't happen again. Jared had laughed at that, but he had to admit Jensen was getting better.
The one change that had not happened was the one Jensen had been hoping for.
The topic had come up on several occasions. Jensen had been born a werewolf, he had never played the Russian Roulette of how his body would react to "getting infected". As Alpha of his pack, though, he had been called in to help when a new pack member was going through a difficult transition and had counseled many humans before they made the decision whether or not to go through with it.
Jensen knew, had seen for himself, how painful the process could be for some. There was no way of knowing who would react badly. The medical providers, called Medicaes, from several packs had been collaborating to determine what the variable was but had not found it yet. It was part of the reason pack law was very clear about never changing a human without their permission.
Jared had wanted to focus on taking care of Jensen as he healed from the vicious wounds he had sustained and recovered from the effects of their separation, and then on trying to heal the emotional trauma between himself and Chad.
It wasn't as though Jared could change his mind once it was done, so Jensen was always careful not to put any pressure on him. They were together, that was what mattered.
At least to Jensen.
Jensen sighed and opened his eyes. Jared's decision to stay human was the catalyst for that day's early morning trip. Headed for yet another meeting, with five other pack leaders this time, to defend his status as Alpha.
Again.
Christian pulled into an open space, scanning the parking lot as he did. Jensen could see Justin's Pathfinder parked nearby and was grateful the other Alpha had been so willing to show his support. Justin had proven to be a real friend in the time since their meeting for the mated pair, Tiffany and Trevor. Level-headed and diplomatic, some were surprised when the fierce heart of the blonde Alpha was revealed - Justin was every bit as adept with tooth and claw as he was with reasoned debate.
An hour later, Jensen nearly got to see Justin's combat prowess firsthand.
The argument over whether or not it was a weakness for an Alpha to "allow" his or her mate to remain human culminated in one not-so-bright pack leader named Philip looking Jensen in the eye and asking, "And what if someone were to "accidentally" infect Jared?"
For a heartbeat nobody in the room even breathed, shocked into silence. Justin stepped up next to Jensen. Their combined rage filled the room like a living thing, choking everyone with the heat of it. Jensen growled, his voice low and dangerous as he responded, "Anyone infects my mate, they'll never have to worry about bleeding on anyone ever again."
Philip smirked, but it could not conceal the fear that was showing plain in his eyes, "Now now, you know the Roknir wouldn't take too kindly to that."
If he thought invoking the Council of Elders would keep him safe, he was sorely mistaken. Justin snarled, "They'd have to find the body parts first."
Jensen's phone beeped, cutting through the tense silence that followed. Philip finally dropped his gaze and took a step back, away from the two furious Alphas. Jensen turned toward the protective semi-circle he knew his guards had formed behind him, digging his phone out of his pocket and checking the caller ID.
"Jeff, this better be good," he growled, trying to shove down the rage that still filled him.
"We just got word, Xander has gone AWOL. His pack is in chaos. It took them two days to get their heads out of their asses and start notifying other packs."
Jensen's blood ran cold at the news. Ted's son Xander had taken control of their pack. He had barely made contact with anyone outside the pack after he had been told of his father's death and had succeeded in securing the Alpha position. Jensen had never actually met Xander, but had seen him a few times when Ted had brought his son along to learn about pack politics and procedures. Jensen couldn't remember ever hearing the younger wolf speak, Xander seemed to prefer to stand apart from everyone, dark eyes never missing a thing.
"I called the house to check on Jared," Jeff continued, his gravelly voice wavering with worry. "There was no answer, I'm on my way there now."
"Jared," Jensen whispered, his heart hammering in his chest. He jabbed the end call key as he headed for the door. "We're leaving. Now."
