I agree with all of this! It seems to me that Dean would have been much more like he was at the end of S4, more passive and dealing with the horror of his situation. He wouldn't have had the energy to deal with Ruby; would likely have been more accepting of her and of Sam's use of his powers from the beginning. He became far more so after he got his memories back, after all.

I'm curious whether canon!Dean remembers the rescue at all. We've never had any sort of description of that scene and all we know is that Dean doesn't know what happened in 4.01. Dean remembering Cas from the beginning might have saved Pamela her sight because he might have been able to give her some info to go off of instead of having her wander in blind. Pun very much not intended. D:

I think we wouldn't have had as much Sam vs. Dean drama, too. It seemed to me that early S4!Sam was looking for ways that he could protect Dean and help him recover, but Dean didn't need it then. He needed that later on, but by that point, Sam was focused on other things. So if Dean had been more openly vulnerable at the start of S4, it would have reinforced Sam's need to get Lilith on the one hand, but I think he also would have been more focused on Dean and Dean's trauma too. Which could have led to some very interesting places as Sam would still have gone down that dark path but Dean wouldn't have been in any place to stop him or even notice how dark that path was going and maybe Dean would have wanted some of that darkness too, to keep them safe.

I think it would have been much more interesting if Dean had remembered from the start, too. I understand why they didn't go that route, but the lost opportunities! The visual cues were nice and I love that Dean still slips in his clothing when he's not with Lisa. The random barbs from others are cool too, like with Christian in 6.01 and that one demon in, what was it, 6.10? 6.11? The episode where they rescued Meg. But it was very low key.
