Once Upon a Time...
...And they lived happily ever after.
Two very common phrases found in fairy tales. Personally, I have always loved fairy tales. I love the fantastical elements and how everything is always so much bigger, so much grander, than everyday life. So here are a few recs for fics based on fairy tales or those that have fairy tale elements.
East of the Sun, West of the Moon by laulan (R, ~31000)
Summary: A practical carpenter, Jensen doesn’t believe in magic or fairytales--but when a messenger appears from thin air looking for him, he finds himself drawn into a quest to rescue a man he has no memory of, who just happens to be trapped in a place no one knows how to get to. No pressure, right? Set in modern times with fantasy elements.
Definitely one of my favorite big bangs this year. This is just gorgeous. I really love how the story is told, how the reader learns the history behind it all piece by piece. It's just gorgeous and fun.
True Love's Kiss by destina (adult, 7500)
Summary: Prince Jared has a plan: slay the dragon, wake the princess with a kiss, and live happily ever after...but he'll settle for two out of three.
A wonderfully hilarious and lovely take on Sleeping Beauty. I'm a little partial to this one but seriously, it's fantastic.
The Silver Ring, a Most Curious Tale in Six Parts by cormallen (NC-17, 25,500)
Summary: Everyone knows that nothing ever happens in quaint, sleepy New Exeter, but to hear Jared Padalecki tell it, the town's rife with adventure, from a fairy princess searching for her true love to neighboring mice redrawing the borders and engaging in mortal combat. Of course, everyone, from his parents to the mayor, also knows that Jared's been making up stories ever since he learned his ABCs, and his friends, the eccentric owners of The Amber Moon Magic Shoppe, only encourage him. So when Sandy and Jeff give Jared a magic ring, it doesn't mean an enchanted prince will be arriving to claim it. Or does it?
There's a reason why everyone loves this one. It's fantastic. You simply can't help but fall in love with her Jared.
Whatever You Wish For, You Keep by obsessed1 and juice817 (adult, 28,000+)
Summary: Cinderella. J2 style. Features evil step-persons, magic and Eric Kripke as Sir Not Appearing In This Film.
I love this one. Which is obvious, seeing as how this is a rec list. But seriously, I love how this fic combines elements from all the Cinderella stories out there. You can't help but root for Jared and I really love the role Jensen's father has in this one.
To Wake a Captive Dreamer by sophie_488 (NC-17, 27,234)
Summary: Once upon a time (ten years ago to be precise) something terrible happened to Jensen. He’s been dealing with it, or failing to deal with it, ever since. His best friend, Chris, takes care of him and Steve takes care of Chris. They’re one precariously balanced little family who also happen to play in a band together. When Jared becomes their new bassist, everything changes. An unorthodox retelling of Sleeping Beauty.
A completely different take on Sleeping Beauty, but I really love how the elements of the fairy tale are weaved into this modern tale.
