  • Characters we may see:
    Sheriff Mills (Kim Rhodes)
Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver) "anything is possible" -Everyone [ link]
    Death [ link]
  • Sam
    • "Sam has generally been the more sensitive one, and to have him deal with a human problem rather than a supernatural one just seemed right to us." -Singer [ link]
    • "When we get into this whole idea of closing the gates of hell, that becomes a real raison d'etre for Sam." -Singer [ link]
  • Dean
    • On Purgatory: "We explore it in most detail in the first half of the season, but a lot of the arc has to do, in terms of flashbacks, with memory and perception. So it’s always open that we could re-explore it at a later date. We never close the door on it, but it's most heavily explored in the first half of the season." -Carver [ link]
  • Castiel
    • Misha Collins will be in a minimum of 8 episodes this season. [ link]
    • "He's moving back towards his roots in a way. He's an angel who's had all these strange experiences with free will and he's actually starting to gravitate back towards ... towards home in a sense, but that's gonna be a different home because the angels' home has been destroyed. He's got a story to play, but it'll take a little longer than the other ones because we kind of front-load it with the boys and then bring him in." -Edlund [ SDCC]
    • "Last season, Cas' relationship arc got virtually none [of the screen time]... This season, there's going to be a lot more of the character interplay, I think." -Collins [ link]
    • "The Dean-Cas bromance can be repaired. I think that they need therapy, but I think that they can get over the hump. [...] I think that that will happen. I'm not sure, but that's my instinct." -Collins [ SDCC]
    • “There’s something going on with Cas that neither Cas nor the brothers know. Cas is sort of being manipulated behind the scenes and he’s not aware of that and neither are the boys.” -Collins [ link]
    • Cas is “reinvigorated with a sense of purpose. He essentially feels like he has to do good in order to right the wrongs of his past. So he starts to collaborate with Sam and Dean for that reason - so that he can continue to try to make things right. He’s no longer paying penance, really, because it’s no longer an act of suffering for him. But he’s doing his best to right the wrongs of his past. He’s doing that in ways that help Sam and Dean and then, ultimately, it might also make life - as per usual with the Supernatural universe - complicated for Sam and Dean. At first, it seems like everything is hunky dory. But things quickly fall apart.” -Collins [ link]
    • Collins becomes regular cast member in season 9, will direct an episode. [ link]
  • Amelia
    • “To say that he has met a woman who could stand as the love of his life to this point, would not be an overstatement. It’s a meaningful relationship.” -Carver [ link]
    • "So we do see Amelia in the present tense, but we do kind of play with present tense and past tense." -Padalecki [ link]
    • May be coming back. [ link]
  • Kevin
    • "Kevin is an integral part of the year." -Singer [ link]
    • Post 8x10: He'll be in at least one more episode. [ link]
  • Benny
    • "Two [episodes] cover heavily how Benny was turned." -Olsson [ link]
    • "We'll see him at least once more [post 8x09]." -Olsson [ link]
    • "Kevin will be back, Benny will be back. Castiel is back. Maybe Amelia, maybe not." -Singer [ link]
  • Crowley
    • "Crowley is what happens when people don't pay attention." -Sheppard [ link]
    • "Crowley thinks more ahead than anybody else on the show. He will be quite an issue. A titanic one." -Edlund [ SDCC]
    • We can expect Crowley to get even darker this season. [ link]
  • "Frankly, my impression this season is that all of the characters are more mature." -Collins [ link]
  • [Carver] has a few things in the works for early season episodes to call back to season one themes, stories, and perhaps even characters. [ link]
  • "I would say that I don’t think anything is done without good reason. One of the things in the show is that, particularly this season, people might think one way about one of the brothers in the beginning. Again, it goes along with perception. I would just ask people to hold on to your hats and understand that we’re going to be exploring each brother, the very complex and difficult things that they’re going through. No one’s hands were completely clean at the end of last season. What you think might be a bad thing -- I don’t think you’ll think that as the season goes on. We’re playing with expectations." -Carver [ link]
  • "It’s very much perceptions this year, so I don’t think it’s going to be as obvious from the get-go who is good and who is bad." -Carver [ link]
  • "I'm going to be off for several episodes consecutively and 15 is one of them." -Collins [ link]
  • Flashbacks in Purgatory post 8x07: Ackles confirmed that we won't be heading back there for a while [ link]
  • Some of the plots will be introduced in the latter half of the season. -Padalecki [ link]
  • Finale airs May 15th. [ link]

SEASON-WIDE ARCS [back to top]
  • Description of Season Eight:Season Eight begins with Dean’s seemingly impossible escape from Purgatory, though Castiel is nowhere to be found. However, Dean isn’t alone. He’s returned with a mysterious comrade-in-arms whose reason for escape is perhaps more than Dean bargained for. Meanwhile, Sam finds himself reconciling the life he discovered while Dean was gone with Dean’s sudden reappearance. As the boys struggle with their unexpected reunion, they make a shocking discovery that could lead them on a deeply personal mission to settle old scores. If only they could agree - is this a “family business” or isn’t it? [ link]
  • Theme of Season Eight [ link]:"Every year we start with a theme -- this is our "Raiders of The Lost Ark" year. This season-long story will be a quest. It's about Kevin and the tablets and the Word of God." -Singer
  • Sam and Dean:
    • "Ultimately, they are pathologically dishonest with each other because John Winchester was pathalogically [sic] elusive to them. They learned that the truth is this dangerous thing, and that you shouldn't speak it. He even taught them to keep secrets from each other for strategic purposes." -Edlund [ link]
    • "They’re kind of emotional shut-ins that have to learn to deal with other people. … We’re trying to get into more complex, real human relationships." -Edlund [ SDCC]
  • The Storyline:
    • "It's not apocalyptic but about who can gain control and keep demons in Hell or angels in Heaven." -Singer [ link]
    • "I do think this season will be a little less earnest and a little more the kind of stuff we did in Seasons 2 and 3, before the weight of all the mythology got us." -Singer [ link]
    • "Suffice to say, the boys have been reacting to things at the beginnings of (past) seasons, and they are starting the year on offense. [...] They really want something. It ties in very deeply with the mythology [and is] something very near and dear to their hearts. They are very much united [in their quest to get it]." -Carver [ SDCC]
    • "[Sam, Dean, Kevin and Crowley are] all involved in a chase for a power source, ultimately." -Edlund. [ SDCC]
    • "I think we're really building some foundations for a storyline that can carry us for at least a few more years. There's a notecard in my office [that says] the end of Season 10." -Carver [ SDCC]
    • "Purgatory is not directly related to that overall, boys' mythology. You're going to see many flashbacks to Purgatory in the first half of the season, and whether or not we see more flashbacks later is still to be determined, but by the first half of the season, you'll have a full understanding of what went down in Purgatory." -Carver [ link]
    • "The information that’s contained in this Men of Letters bunker, if it fell into the wrong hands, would be quite a powerful weapon against the boys, so it has to remain a secret and guarded closely. As we go down the line into the rest of this year and hopefully next year, those sort of dramatic turns will take place because this is an important place." -Singer [ link]
  • The Big Bad:
    • "It's basically an angels-and-demons year." -Singer [ link]
    • There is no big bad for the season -- there's a goal, and several villains (some familiar, some not) who are hoping to reach that goal before the Winchesters do. [ link]
