"You go live some normal, apple-pie life" - Sam, 5.22 Swan Song
Mary wiped her forehead, unmindful of the flour smear her hand left in its wake. It's not like she didn't already have apple sauce in her hair.
"You're sure that's what you really want?" she asked Dean, her voice sounding high and tight to her own ears. "I mean, wouldn't you prefer to go to a diner?"
"Nah, Mom. You're too modest," Dean chuckled. "I still remember, even now, eating your apple pie as a child. It was awesome, the best ever," he added, all misty-eyed as he gave her a peck on the cheek.
Mary smiled wanly as her son abandoned her to her fate. Turning back to her baking disaster in the making, she spotted another apple core she'd missed. She used her hunting knife to pluck it from the filling.
Life was so much simpler when I had a neighbor's baking to pass off as my own.
