[He rubs at his nose for a moment, because he doesn't really want to admit about how much time he tends to spend flicking through books.]

You got somethin' specific you want to know?

Probably, but I'd like to learn how to read on my own one of these days.

[He pauses, trying to make sure he has the word right.]

...Can you explain what a "fiancee" is?

Oh, uh. [He has to think about it a moment, because it wasn't like he'd actually known anyone who had gotten married.] S'when people're gettin' married, you know, before, when they're engaged. They're fiancées then.

[He swats at the book by his paws again, mulling over that answer.]

"Married", "engaged"... I guess there's a lot of words out there I don't really understand.

[Bambi just stares blankly at his seal for a moment, because how do you explain marriage? A dictionary would explain better, but the cat's said he can't read, so Bambi should at least try.]

Married is like, two people, they love each other a lot an' want to spend the rest of their lives together. Don't always work out that long, though, or you ain't as happy as you thought, so you separate. Maybe divorce.

[Way to dive straight into the complicated part, Bambi. He scratches at his jaw, drags the topic back.]

Marryin' though, there's a big thing, called a weddin', an' you wear a ring, to show you're married, an' sometimes the chick gets the guy's last name, if she wants. Engaged is when you're plannin' on gettin' married. The girl gets a ring for that too, sometimes.

[That explanation's a lot to take in at once. Give him a moment to sort this all out.]

So marriage is a big deal because you love someone and want to be with them for the rest of your life, and you get engaged to do that, and when you're engaged, you're a fiancee...

[He's slowly figuring this out.]

Yeah, that's it.

[He nods, vaguely proud that he actually managed to explain it.]

I mean, sometimes the people don't love each other, they just want the other person's money, or somethin' 'bout the law an' stuff. But those people're lying, really, 'cause it's meant to be for love.

You said love and marriage are things that are supposed to make people happy, but you make it sound like it can make them sad, too.

[He's quiet for a moment, wondering if maybe he has a skewed perception of marriage, his parents' being one of the worst situations everything could boil down into.]

Sometimes... it just ain't right. Like you ain't the right people for each other, or marriage ain't right for you, even if you love each other. An' sometimes the love goes, or somethin' changes-- everythin' changes, you know? 'Specially people. An' they can get stupid, hurt each other, make mistakes, things they can't fix.

But some of 'em get stuck, 'cause they're married, an' they stay even though it hurts, or it hurts 'cause they stay. Or they split up, 'cause of mistakes, or one of 'em ain't happy anymore, an' that hurts, too.

[He pauses, thinks that does all sound way too sad, and really maybe he shouldn't be rambling on so much. He doesn't normally talk this much, normally keeps all his thoughts to himself, but Sissel had asked, and he was just trying to answer as best he could.]But it can be happy.
