Day 05 - show you hate: Glee. (This was written last year, so doesn’t address the current season.) The hipster racism, the hipster ableism, the hipster sexism… I could go on. And I wanted to like this show. It hit all the wrong buttons for me. While individually some of the women characters have agency and strength, the overall narrative of the show undercuts that all the time, and it makes me crazy. And it's not just the gender stuff. There are the race issues and disability issues and OMFG both pregnancy storylines... The premise is a bait and switch, because it's really not about the motley crew of the Glee Club overcoming whatever, only some of them, and the rest of the Glee kids end up like props. And even then the whole show feels like it's about Will's manpain, and the kids are his weekly lesson in not being a douche. Which he continually fails to learn. I want stories about ALL of the kids - Mercedes and Artie and Tina, Santana, Matt and Mike, not just Rachel, Finn, Quinn and now Puck, who have dominated the stories so far. Jane Lynch's Sue works because she's played as delicious satire. All the other abhorrent characters just come across as charicatures, and not in an enjoyable way. It's one of those shows where the stuff I like isn't enough to entice me to look past the stuff I don't like. And do NOT get me started on the infertility/faked pregnancy/adoption storyline. OMFG.
And I am not judging you if you love the show. Really.
(Seriously, I am not interested in debating the merits of the show or any improvements. I know some people think it’s improved, but it killed any chance it had with me, enough that any improvement will be tainted by my rage.)
