I'm alive.
Between a serious, never-ending overload at work sucking my energy and soul and being sick on and off for the last few weeks, I haven't had much gumption to be sociable and haven't wanted to torture you all with my grumbling and complaining and constant rants about the ridiculous mistakes people make in submitting applications for faculty searches (the poor folks on my twitter feed were not so lucky).
Anyway, that which I have been up to, other than work and hacking up a lung:
1. Writing! Slooooooooowly, but steadily. I came to the stunning conclusion recently that 100 words a day was slow, but still leaves me with words, whereas staring at a file for three months and writing nothing doesn't. A 100 word goal isn't overwhelming when I'm already tired overloaded and sickly, whereas I sit down and think about having to write 1000 words, and my brain freaks. I get overwhelmed and frustrated and suddenly ANYTHING is more fun than writing. Doing laundry. Cleaning the toilet. Cleaning litterboxes sounds more appealing. 100 words doesn't terrify my tiny attention span, and hey, a lot of times 100 words leads to 200 or 300 words. It's also neatly muzzled my internal editor by keeping me focused and moving forward in smaller, easily manageable chunks. So, I call win.
2. Debrief re-orging. Working out the final details on the editorial guide to bring our new editors up to speed, and hopefully when it's all in place, getting some of my fannish time back.
3. Prepping for a fanfic panel at ConFusion. Fanfic panels at SF cons are pretty hit or miss, emphasis on the miss, largely because SF con fandom culture is not media fandom culture is not fanfic/fanworks fandom culture. SF con fic panels often end up run by people with little to no experience in fanfic fandom, usually casual fic readers. So after a few of us were "that fan" at the ConClave fic panel in October and all but took it over, the lovely Anne Harris decided we needed a fic panel run by fic people for ConFusion, and I was a draftee. I think it will be awesome. There will be handouts. And maybe diagrams.
4. Cleaning. My goal for the winter is trying to keep the house cleaner, in hopes of mitigating the constant recycling of dust and allergens in my nice, closed-up environment. This is very hard for me in winter, because the cold really affects me, and all I want to do is huddle under the electric blanket and hibernate. But so far so good. I've got both the hepa filters going, manages to glean out the humidifier fan, have been washing all the bedroom and couch blankets regularly.
5. Watching the TV. I finally dumped Supernatural (apparently right before it got good again, sigh) and SGA. Still watching Boston Legal, Pushing Daisies (*wah*), Bones, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Sanctuary, Sarah Conner Chronicles, The Starter Wife... and that's all I think is running now. I'm about to start rewatching the last two SG-1 seasons (I have a portable dvd player set up on my treadmill), since I missed a number of eps.
Plus I need to start some beading for Christmas presents soon. Yay shiny!
So that's the haps. I'm working on a response to the Top 5 fannish moments meme that's going around, and I need to start my 2008 in Fannish Review post, and I'm slogging closer to the end of some utterly cracktastic Tony/Vala. And I miss you guys.
