Dude. Thank god they are few and far between, because I really can't handle fic that deals with infertility. Not because it hits too close to home, but because after five years of dealing with it myself, and three years of treatment, I know far too much about the process to not read these stories and go, "What? WHAT? NO. That's... NO. OMG. ( Read more... )

I'm not sure what fandom has the infertility fic in it, but I sort of loath burdening characters with that kind of stuff if it's not canon. If it's not X-files (and okay... I've read a few of those and they're not any better) then I'm not all that interested. I mean, I kind of put it in the category with fics like, Teal'c Goes To The Dentist. Besides, medical fic outside of battle injuries isn't my thing.

And... I've said that and am now eying my epic Dark!SG-1 fic which has copious amounts medical stuff with regards to one particular member. Ack!

Sending you soothing thoughts for your Art Fair (dreaded thing??? - I just woke up and brain is not fully engaged)

Except minnow1212 actually wrote that (well, kind of), and it was awesome *g*.

Oh, that really was good!

Just goes to show what something like that can be in the hands of a talented writer.

My guess is she's reading fic of the Iron Man ilk, where infertility is actually comic!canon, so at least there's that. But still.

It was IM, but movieverse, and I'd bet the writer has no clue about the comic canon of it.

I'm not familiar with either the movie or the comicverse, so okay.

But still...

*nods* I'm always shocked by fic writers' desire to up the angst ante by giving their characters more crap to deal with when, in most fandoms, the characters are already dealing with so much chronic stress and trauma that it's a wonder they get out of bed at all.

Also, medical fic. *shudders* We avoids it like the plague, we do.

I think that's my problem with it. There's so much more that could be explored with most characters other than the mundane (or relatively so).

Like Minnow's fic mentioned below, in the hands of a good writer, those stories are excellent. But when it's not an organic part of the story, and just used as a shorthand for characterization, then it SUCKS.
