this week was PRIDE week, democrat week, and republican (morals) week.
Bay Buchanan came to speak on monday about how feminism had failed women. the flyer for it read "feminazis beware" and mentioned a few stereotypes for feminazis. I went because I thought something funny might happen and because I was a little intrigued if a coherent argument could be made that fit the flyer at all.
it all turned really retarded really fast. Buchanan basically made arguments that worded and directed differently would have made good thought-provoking arguments and instead turned them prickly and polarizing. this had the desired effect of getting the ultra-liberal crowd to get very riled up. some of the ultra-liberals began to boo and heckle her and pull retarded pointless stunts.
at one point she was arguing that, after aborting her baby, a 14 year old became an alcoholic and eventually died at 30 something drunk and frozen behind some bar. she could have said that statistics suggest that women who have abortions have a higher ratio of alcoholism and drug abuse but instead she instantly made the conection based on assumptions so it was a pretty bad argument to begin with. the fucked up part was when the ULs started laughing at the story. I said fairly loudly at them "how can you laugh at this?" and most shut up. but after the story was done and buchanan started ranting again the heckling came back even stronger. she couldn't even talk over the noise. during one of the heckling waves a dude even stood up and took off his shirt to show that he had written something about feminists or something across his chest. he had bitch-tits and very big nipples so it was kind of disturbing and even more so the fact that they all started applauding him like he'd done a neat trick of some sort. all that was lacking was someone giving him a treat and saying "good doggy."
during one of the heckling sessions I finally lost it. I really just wanted to get to the Q&A and have some sort of actual productive discussion and these clowns kept delaying it so I stood up and screamed "shut the fuck up! I'm fucking ashamed of all of you! just let her fucking finish!" it kind of took them aback that someone actually yelled at them so the shut up for a bit. the only down side is that the policeman walked down to where I was and told me I had to leave. one of the hippies said "man, he got kicked out before we did."
I talked to the cop for a bit and found out he actually disagreed with a lot of what buchanan was saying. he took down my personal info but it's been a week and nothing has happened. I am told that nothing really changed after I left. apparently near the end of it the feminazies took off their shirts and walked out of the place with bras on. I guess their roomates didn't mind letting them borrow one for few hours.
I missed some other events. I didn't really feel like they would have much to say anyways. thursday I somehow got guy, andrew, and david to come hear Lt. Col. Rutter talk. I didn't even know what he would be talking about, I just knew he was talking. I sat in the back in case any hippies pissed me off I could just walk out. for the most part they didn't. they booed when bush came on-screen which was a little disruptive but not outright disrespectful to the speaker. they passed out the usual "drive out the bush regime" pamphlets with the usual propaganda.
The soldier dude was full of crap for the most part. I believe him when he was talking about war things but not much else. he claimed that resolution 1441 of the security council gave the US permission to go into iraq. wikipedia it. it doesn't. at the least he was honest. when I asked about how much training they received to train the iraqi police and the army he said some but not enough. he made the mistake of making a joke about the bible being a kind of training and one of the hippies was petty enough to make him take it back. at the least it was funny to see him squirm a bit.
I later found out from david that "king hippy," as we dubbed him, kept blabbering on constantly throughout the presentation about how the soldier was insane and a monster. war is war is war. rutter probably shouldn't have shown a bunch of college kids how war really works. the strategy was brilliant and the weapons are destructive beyond anything I pictured but hippies (hell, even civilians) aren't going to understand that when you fight a war you intend to win it. he spent very little time on the current situtation in iraq but he did spend a lot of time on a cgi video of the first officer to win a medal in iraq died protecting his soldiers. I think the republicans were as glad as I was that it wasn't like monday. I dont like the military as an institution but I have plenty of friends and I know plenty of people in some of the branches and I just sort of feel bad for them. they dont get "instant respect" just like few people in my book get "instant respect" but I dont hold the fact that they are in the military against them. maybe lifers. no reason to be a lifer.
friday the republicans had a p.e.t.a. (people for the eating of tasty animals) bbq. clever but pointless. there's no actual political statement there. no productive debate or argument. it was all-around useless. then the hippies came out en-force to parade in front of the republicans. apparently "lack a cack" thunder came out which had lots of people excited. it was all basically just as pointless as the bbq. that music comes from brazil. hippies think it's cool because the first WSF meeting took place in brazil so when they were shown clips of that meeting they heard those drums and thought they had something to do with anti-globalisation. there would be singing involved but I doubt they know a language other than english much less portuguese. some dude got arrested for pointing out the undercover policemen but other than that not much else happened. a dude yelled "republicans, you just got served!" and it made me want to rip their throat out. a pop-culture refence from a shitty movie and we are supposed to take you seriously??? the republicans and the ultra-liberals shouldn't have been yelling at each other that day, they should have been talking to the people watching the going-ons and informing them on their point of view. I left to go to valle crucis and I guess I'll make a post about that later. gots classes to go toes!
