‘Who the heck are you and what did you do to the shortest of my best friends?’

On Saturday, Dongwoo stepped into Woohyun’s warm house and saw him sitting at the coffee table, books and papers splayed out in front of him. He could not believe his eyes. Nam Woohyun was studying and it wasn’t porn and he wasn’t procrastinating. What had the world come to?

‘You aren’t exactly vertically gifted either, you know,’ Woohyun scoffed, not moving his eyes away from his textbook.

Dongwoo was suspicious. It might’ve been a prank set up by Sungyeol - Woohyun could’ve been the bait in his trap. He slowly slid his feet towards the other, moving stealthily and sideways to avoid setting off any booby-traps that he could trigger. Once he got to Woohyun’s side, he let his guard down a little, peering over Woohyun’s shoulder. ‘Are you studying?’ he asked sceptically, making sure to drag out every syllable.

‘I’m trying to,’ Woohyun grunted. Dongwoo was distracting him and he didn’t appreciate it.

‘Why?’

He nagged, hitting the other away with his rolled up notes, ‘Shouldn’t you be studying? We both have exams next week.’

‘Why are you only studying math?’ Dongwoo asked in fascination, flipping over pages and seeing sticky notes fly everywhere, ‘Actually, why are you, Nam Woohyun, studying in general?’

‘It’s a long story,’ Woohyun sighed, resting his face in his hand as he continued filling out his practice equations.

Dongwoo snorted, ‘Shorten it.’

Woohyun narrowed his eyes at him, before shaking his head and opening another textbook. ‘It’s been years since someone has cooked for me,’ he mumbled, making the other tilt his head.

‘Your maids always offer you. You just decline because you’re being nice to them,’ Dongwoo retorted, ‘What does that have to do with you studying?’

Woohyun lost it and threw some scrunched up papers at him, shouting, ‘Go away so I could study!’

After dodging all the paper balls, Dongwoo fled to the front door. ‘Fine,’ he spat, ‘I’m sure Howon won’t mind me coming over.’

-

‘But I thought you wouldn’t mind me coming over.’ Dongwoo pouted.

Howon felt guilty, but restrained himself from letting Dongwoo inside. ‘I’m sorry. I just can’t afford any distractions at the moment,’ he apologised, leaning on the door frame.

Everyone was studying and Dongwoo wasn’t. Maybe he should’ve been studying too, but Dongwoo wasn’t the type to study more than a day beforehand. He always felt that he did better when he studied the night before because he was able to remember a lot more.

‘So I’m a distraction,’ he sighed dejectedly, twisting his toes into the welcome mat.

Howon smiled, trying to cheer him up, ‘Yes, but you’re not a bad one.’

The smile immediately made Dongwoo feel much brighter. He grinned and chirped, ‘Okay… I’ll come over as soon as the exams are finished.’

As he was about to walk away, Howon quickly grabbed his arm and called his name. Dongwoo laughed and realised he forgot.

‘Love you,’ he whispered, wrapping his arms around Howon’s neck and giving him a kiss goodbye.

‘And I you.’

It was torture at the Kim residence. Myungsoo was trapped - not his room, but Sunggyu’s room, and forced to study. (The sprained ankle worked to Sunggyu’s advantage very well. Although it was almost completely healed, it was still a bit sore and Myungsoo was a wuss.) He had no intentions on studying, not when he could be making out with his boyfriend all day. Too bad his brother could turn anything in reach into a weapon of torturous motivation. Sunggyu was also studying, in Myungsoo’s pigsty of a room, checking up on his brother every half an hour or so. They had been at it for hours. Sunggyu got through a lot of revision while Myungsoo half-assed his way through one textbook.

The second Sunggyu stepped into his room to check on Myungsoo, the latter groaned, ‘Gyu, I know school is a big deal and everything, but I’m eighteen! Can’t I just live a little?’

Sunggyu picked up the papers under Myungsoo’s arm and rolled his eyes. He’d barely done anything, the page filled with scribbles more than anything. ‘Kim Myungsoo, I’m not letting you off until you finish this!’ he scolded, hitting Myungsoo’s head with his half-hearted work.

‘Hyung, when the hell in my life am I going to use calculus?’ Myungsoo whined, kicking his feet up and down, ‘I don’t even know why we have to learn ninety-nine percent of the crap in school!’

Sunggyu finally understood where Myungsoo was going with this. ‘Let me put it this way,’ he lectured, ‘Yes, I understand what you mean. You are definitely not going to use everything they teach you at school and you are definitely not going to remember everything.’

Myungsoo rose an eyebrow.

‘But that’s the point.’

Sunggyu then walked over to the balcony doors and drew the curtains open to let some natural lighting in. He gave Myungsoo a small smile.

‘The things that stick with you are most likely the things you enjoy and that you’re good at,’ he continued, ‘These memories help you decide what you should pursue as a career.’

Myungsoo nodded and looked down to his paper, thinking.

‘But, how should I know?’ Sunggyu clicked his tongue. ‘After all, it’s just a little bit of Lee Howon’s philosophy.’

The younger brother’s eyes widened. ‘Howon told you that?’

‘Take a shower before you do finish that section. That way you’ll have a clear mind,’ Sunggyu said, ‘and you won’t stink as much.’ He grinned before walking out and back into the neighbouring bedroom. Myungsoo stretched, got up and walked to the bathroom.

-

Sungjong was studying in his room yet again. This time, he was actually very into it and he was working consistently. His dad had come in and lectured him about not caring about his future enough, not knowing what triggered such lecture. Sungjong just sat there and sucked it up like a doormat. His father then nagged him for not reading through his book, even though Sungjong only stopped because his father had walked in and began moving his mouth. After he left, Sungjong turned back to his desk and sighed.

Two hours after that incident, Yongguk called him and Sungjong cursed himself for forgetting to turn off his phone.

‘Are you free now?’ came Yongguk’s deep, sleepy voice.

Sungjong squeezed his eyes shut, maintaining his frustration. ‘I can’t, I’m studying,’ he deadpanned.

Silence came, along with Yongguk’s obviously irritated sigh. ‘You know, it’s starting to sound like an excuse. I’m busy, I’m tired, I’m studying - They all sound like excuses,’ Yongguk mentioned.

Sungjong explained sternly, ‘Yongguk, exams are next week. I am not making excuses.’

‘This time isn’t - I know that - but all those other times, like a month ago when you told me you were studying, even though I’d been reminding you about the art event since ages ago. That really got to me, Sungjong.’

Sungjong raised his voice, ‘I was really studying! I’m not like Sunggyu or Myungsoo or Howon who barely need to study at all to get good scores. I actually need to work really hard.’

‘You’ve worked hard for weeks then! Can’t you just take a break? You’re seventeen. It’s not like not doing the best now is going to affect much.’

Sungjong was royally pissed at the moment and the lack of sleep wasn’t helping. He let his head fall back as he let out a groan. He never thought they would argue, especially over the phone, but they were and Sungjong just wanted to get it over and done with.

‘I know I’m young. I know I have my whole life ahead of me, but this is important to me,’ he shouted, ‘You need to stop holding me back from preparing for my future or take care of yourself!’

There was silence again and Sungjong realised what he had just said. He sat on his bed, splayed his legs apart and rubbed his face.

‘Fine then,’ Yongguk replied quietly, ‘I won’t hold you back at all.’

Sungjong was smart enough to know what that meant. ‘Fine,’ he spat in a shaky voice, through gritted teeth. He hung up and turned his phone off, feeling hot tears well up in his eyes.

And that’s how Sungjong learnt that not all first loves stayed, not all of them could grow old with you and support you when you really needed it, not all of them turned out like how you would imagine.

-

Sunggyu was drowning himself in books, tapping his pen on the page he was reading. It was boring because he’d read it all before. It was nothing new, but he knew he had to strengthen his memory for the exams. When he was about to get up and grab a drink, his phone rang.

‘Hello?’ he sighed into the device.

‘Sunggyu! I’m bored and Sungyeol, Woohyun and Howon are studying, and Yongguk won’t answer me at all.’

‘Myungsoo and I are studying too, but you could come over…’

‘Really?’

‘Yeah, I think I need a break.’

-

‘Do you know why Woohyun is studying?’ Dongwoo was sitting on Sunggyu’s bed with him, both sucking on lollipops, while Myungsoo was still in the shower. He was probably procrastinating because he usually didn’t take more than an hour in the bathroom.

Sunggyu twirled the raspberry lollipop over his puckered lips, before he licked the sugary red tint off and smirked in thought. He replied simply, ‘He’s competitive.’ When it came to Sunggyu, Woohyun was extremely competitive.

Dongwoo tilted his head, pulling his green lollipop out with a pop. Of course he knew Woohyun was a little active when it came to certain things and he loved winning, but he also knew that Woohyun didn’t care that someone got an eighty-nine and he didn’t. He never cared that everyone was doing better than him on tests or that he was ranked so low he didn’t even pay attention anymore.

Sensing Dongwoo’s confusion, Sunggyu clicked his tongue. ‘We made a rather stupid deal,’ he cleared up, shifting his lollipop to his other cheek, ‘I have to cook for him for every point he gets over sixty.’

‘You’re going to be cooking a lot then,’ Dongwoo laughed, shaking his head in disbelief.

Widening his eyes, Sunggyu’s smile disappeared as he exclaimed in fascination, ‘Really?’

‘Woohyun could get good scores when he tries,’ Dongwoo said, shrugging.

After a few minutes of talking about Woohyun and his held-back potential, Sunggyu became frustrated as to why he had yet to hear the bathroom door open. He finally got off his sweatpants-clad ass and pressed his ear against the bathroom door - It was possible the brat fell asleep in there. It wasn’t the first time it would’ve happened. Myungsoo was talking about this and that, but it still wasn’t an indication as to whether he was asleep or not. Seriously, Sunggyu could hear Myungsoo practically reading out essays in his sleep at times.

When Sunggyu listened for a little longer, staying quiet to make out what his brother was saying, Sunggyu concluded that Myungsoo was talking to his boyfriend and he almost bolted the door open. Instead, he spat out graphic threats that had Myungsoo hurriedly hanging up on Sungyeol and carefully prying open the door. As he stuck his head out, he grinned awkwardly and Sunggyu raised an eyebrow, his arms crossed. If Dongwoo wasn’t in the next room, Myungsoo wouldn’t have seen the light of day every again.

Sunggyu grit his teeth and hissed, feigning a bright smile, ‘Time for work, lover boy. If I here another word out of you, I’m going to sever your tongue off and make you write out every physics formula there is in your own blood.’

-

The physics exam was on Monday, so Dongwoo found it logical to only study for it on Sunday night and possibly Monday morning, before the exam, if he had the chance. He was up in his room, his nose in his book as he went over the notes he had written down since the start of the semester. To be honest, he was going to give up and get something to eat until his dad opened the door. He immediately straightened up, got comfortable in his seat and acted like he was interested by radioisotopes and neutron absorption.

Dongwoo’s father was whistling to some old tune Dongwoo was too young to know and examined his books. ‘Exams are coming, aren’t they?’ he asked in little interested. He then proceeded to ruffle his son’s hair in affection and encourage, ‘Good luck, squirt.’

Dongwoo sneered and snapped, ‘Dad, why do you still call me squirt?’

‘Well,’ he sighed. ‘When a mummy and daddy love each other, they -‘

‘Get out,’ Dongwoo grunted. He began pushing his amused father out of his room with a contorted face. After shutting the door with a thud, he wriggled around in disgusting, shouting, ‘Ew!’

Without even thinking, he ran to his phone and texted Howon about the horrific incident and how he would never think the same about his parents again.

To: HOWONIE
D; Can you please bleach my brain?

Unexpectedly, Howon replied within minutes after sending the text. Dongwoo thought his phone would’ve been off because he was probably studying his butt off like the good boy he was.

From: HOWONIE
But I think you’d die

Dongwoo grinned at the phone.

To: HOWONIE
Naaww :’) you don’t want me to die

From: HOWONIE
:D

His boyfriend was too cute sometimes. Dongwoo gained a lot more energy to study all of a sudden.

-

Sungjong couldn’t concentrate if his life depended on it. Since that phone call with Yongguk, he couldn’t remember the names of the nitrogenous bases or what was the name of the first stage in meiosis. He couldn’t explain the similarities between enzyme-substrate and hormone-receptor relationships - not when he felt like a shit person who let their relationship fall apart. It definitely wasn’t the first time his passion for schoolwork had more or less indirectly discontinued his relationships. His first boyfriend, Byunghun, was a quiet type and gave him lots and lots of attention. Sungjong was only in freshman year, but he had somehow pushed Byunghun out of his life. Same with Minsoo - They barely got to see each other around exam time and so Minsoo had to call up and ask if they were still dating six months after they last talked. And of course the answer was no.

Yongguk was definitely the same and Sungjong knew all too well it was his fault. However, Sungjong really liked Yongguk. It was the first time he actually had a chance to say that it was over and that they wouldn’t depend on each other anymore. It was the first time he had actually broken up with someone straight out and it felt disgusting. He felt sick inside and he couldn’t ignore the feeling when there were two-hundred and thirty-four pages of blah in front of him.

When he was about to flip back to the first page and start again, he heard the door to his bedroom click. He heard his dad’s soft voice, ‘You okay, Sungjong?’

‘Yeah, I’m fine,’ Sungjong forced out, licking his lips as he pretended to write a few notes down.

‘Study then,’ he heard next, ‘I expect you won’t allow any distractions to get to you. You’re better than that.’

The door closed again and Sungjong’s face met the pages.

-

Biology was the first exam to kicks things off on Monday. Sunggyu was waiting patiently by the entrance to the gymnasium, where the exam was set up to be held. (Dongwoo and Howon would have to find somewhere else to hang out for the next week or so, unfortunately.) He was grasping his wrist, his other hand holding onto his stationery. Things were too silent and it made him a little nervous as he unconsciously started revising in his head.

He felt a presence besides him but ignored it, knowing it was probably just another person taking the exam. It was a little weird because Paraners tended to avoid Sunggyu at all times, but Sunggyu brushed it off. He then heard a familiar voice and smiled, turning around.

‘Nervous?’ Doojoon asked, his lips curled in a small smile of concern.

Sunggyu nodded and confessed, letting go of his cool reputation for a while, ‘A little, I admit, but it’s not anything new.’ He aced biology, after all.

Doojoon swallowed and nodded in understanding. ‘Honestly, I’m besides myself about this. It’s like I can’t remember anything at all,’ he laughed nervously.

‘I’m sure you’ll do well. Your results are very promising,’ Sunggyu assured politely. Doojoon didn’t look like the type who slacked off and skipped studying. Since he had arrived at the school, his rank climbed up to the top end of the year level and Sunggyu was rather impressed at his dedication to his schoolwork, despite his commitment to soccer.

Doojoon looked surprised. ‘You’ve seen my results?’

‘I have access to everyone’s results so I could improve them.’

‘Ah, I see. The… The bleachers, right?’ Doojoon said carefully, rubbing the nape of his neck.

The corner of Sunggyu’s lip quirked in amusement. ‘Well, at first it’s a friendly talk. If I determine they are sincerely trying, I arrange a tutor with them. If they aren’t putting any effort in, then the bleachers are in order.’

‘I like your system.’

‘I appreciate it,’ Sunggyu laughed as Doojoon bit back a wide smile.

The doors to the gym opened and everyone silenced. The teachers filed out one by one and ordered them to stand with their classes. Doojoon waved Sunggyu goodbye and wished him luck, Sunggyu did the same and went to find the rest of his classmates.

There were two minutes before they were to enter and Sunggyu hadn’t seen Woohyun turn up. He furrowed his brow and began chanting threats and curses under his breath. The teacher waved for his class to enter first and Sunggyu could’ve killed someone. But before they stepped in, he saw the teacher glare at someone in the back. Sunggyu diverted his attention to the back of the group and saw a panting Woohyun smirking at him. He rolled his eyes and discretely flipped him off.

-

It was complete silence in the gym, only the sounds of the teachers intimidating steps and scribbling of pens were heard. About thirty minutes after they started, Sungjong began to feel sick. He took his eyes off the papers, off of the question on the parasites and parasitical relationships, and looked around the hall, only seeing his classmates struggling and high walls. It was the first time in his life he felt claustrophobic, even in such a large room, and wanted to throw up - Why, thank you, lack of sleep and headache and painkillers and fucking Bang Yongguk.

His hand shot up straight into the air and he watched as an apprehensive teacher approached him. Sungjong leaned over and whispered, ‘Could I please go to the restroom?’

The teacher visibly held back an eye-roll before signalling him to stand up and follow her out. As he passed, he met eyes with Sunggyu shooting him a confused look. He didn’t want any of this to effect Sunggyu, so he forced a smile and stepped through the doors, closing them behind him.

-

After the exam was over, Sunggyu waited by the doors to find Sungjong, but before he could grab him, Sungjong walked past without noticing. Sunggyu shook his head and sighed. He made note to talk to Sungjong later.

When he was about to walk away and get something to eat, he saw Woohyun approaching him and almost threw a punch at his face just for the fun of it. It was tempting, but Sunggyu refrained from giving the younger a surprise greeting any time soon.

‘So how did you do?’ Woohyun asked, cheesy smile on his face - another reason why Sunggyu was oh so tempted to punch him.

‘Biology is one of my better subjects, so not bad,’ Sunggyu answered modestly. ‘You were very… relaxed in there.’ Well, Woohyun was sleeping like a baby. How much more relaxed could he have been? Woohyun was a few desks away from Sunggyu and it made Sunggyu roll his eyes when he saw how comfortable Woohyun found his exam booklet.

Woohyun chuckled, ‘I answered all the multiple choice questions. That’s something, right?’ Well, it didn’t exactly take that much effort to circle thirty numbers in a random order.

‘Honestly, I’m just satisfied you turned up at all,’ the older student commented, smirk tugging at his lips.

Woohyun was going to say something suggestive about fulfilling Sunggyu’s satisfaction, but he noticed the other looking behind him and so he turned around, not exactly pleased to see Yoon Doojoon coming towards them with a stupidly friendly smile on his face.

‘Hey,’ Sunggyu greeted casually. Woohyun frowned - Sunggyu never greeted him first.

‘Hi,’ Doojoon said brightly, ‘It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.’

Sunggyu hummed in approval. ‘I agree. The only question that I was concerned over was the last one, the one about meiosis.’

‘Me too! I was digging my head in trying to remember that,’ Doojoon exclaimed. He then felt a pair of eyes piercing into his skull - Woohyun being the jealous owner of those eyes - and swallowed. He cleared his throat and mentioned, implying that he was leaving, ‘Well, I might see you tomorrow…?’ Doojoon grinned toothlessly at Sunggyu, his hand rubbing the nape of his neck awkwardly. Woohyun refused to admit that he was good-looking in the slightest and that Sunggyu was actually pleasant to this guy.

‘Perhaps. I have my Chinese exam in the afternoon,’ Sunggyu remarked, his lips pursing.

‘I might catch you then,’ Doojoon chuckled. He then gave a small wave and said, ‘Bye.’

Sunggyu gave a smile and said in return, ‘Bye.’

‘Bye Woohyun,’ Doojoon called politely as he began walking away. Woohyun grunted in acknowledgement before looking at Sunggyu, who was raising an eyebrow at him.

‘Zěnme huíshì?’

Woohyun gaped a little, before spitting, ‘What?’

Chuckling under his breath, Sunggyu repeated in a language Woohyun could understand, ‘What’s wrong?’

‘Nothing,’ Woohyun snapped all too quickly. He then blew the hair out of his eyes and asked thoughtfully, ‘Want me to walk you home?’

It was funny to see Woohyun so worked up with obvious jealousy, but nonetheless, Sunggyu shook his head and answered, ‘I have my history exam in a while.’

‘Oh… Well, good luck,’ Woohyun said dryly, turning around. ‘I might see you at the physics exam.’

Before he could go, Sunggyu tugged at the back of his blazer. ‘Woohyun, just tell me why you don’t like Doojoon,’ he whinged, playing cute. He knew Woohyun liked it when he played cute.

Woohyun huffed in frustration, ‘It’s not that I don’t like him, I just don’t know him that well, okay?’

He then trudged away again, leaving Sunggyu to watch him while shaking his head in disbelief. ‘Shuō huǎng zhě…’ Sunggyu scoffed under his breath.

-

Two of Myungsoo’s and Sungyeol’s exams were done that day (not really much compared to Sunggyu, who unfortunately had biology, history and physics all in one day). They celebrated by eating cake straight out of the box it came in and eating bags of fun-sized candy bars. They soon learnt that the aftermath of over-eating, especially with junk food, wasn’t very pleasant. Eventually, the idea of relaxing in Myungsoo’s room while Sunggyu was out somewhere came up and so Sungyeol agreed.

He easily found the younger’s bed and collapsed onto it. ‘I like your bed,’ he stated, his voice muffled by Myungsoo’s pillow, ‘It smells like strawberry-frosted vanilla cupcakes.’

Myungsoo sat on his swivelling desk chair and chuckled, ‘I think it’s because that’s what my cum smells like.’

Sungyeol sat up, his face blank. He then stood up and began walking to the door, mumbling calmly, ‘I’m going now.’

Before he could leave, Myungsoo stopped him, suppressing his laughter at Sungyeol’s off reaction. ‘I’m joking! Babe, don’t leave me,’ he whined, sitting on his bed and making Sungyeol sit in his lap. Sungyeol pouted but wrapped his arms around Myungsoo’s neck anyway, holding him closer. Myungsoo rested the side of his face on his boyfriend’s chest, indulging in his warmth. Silence fell between them and they both found pleasure in the moments where they could just hold each other and not have to speak a word.

Myungsoo was the one to break the silence and asked, ‘We’re going to be okay, right?’

Sungyeol’s expression contorted in confusion.

‘You’re not going to freak out and run away, are you?’ Myungsoo laughed breathless, kissing up Sungyeol’s neck.

Sungyeol flushed a little at how sincere his question sounded, despite the laugh that hindered the weight of his words. He shook his head. ‘Nope,’ he assured, ‘I won’t.’

Sungyeol felt a kiss to his earlobe and heard the words love you whispered into his ear like it was the easiest thing to say in the world.

He grinned. ‘Love you too.’ Since he was stubborn, he added, ‘Don’t get me wrong, you’re still a jerk.’

Myungsoo smirked into his neck.

-

By Wednesday, Sunggyu no longer cared why Woohyun hated Doojoon so much. He could’ve been as rude and intimidating all he wanted - Sunggyu didn’t give a shit. The only thing that Sunggyu did care about was whether or not Woohyun was going to show up to the math exam or not. Well, of course he would show up, but was he really going to try? Another thing was - Was he going to actually be allowed into the exam? On Monday, Woohyun had somehow gotten away with a thin sweater underneath his blazer. It was probably because Dongwoo’s biology teacher had the hots for him - the fluttery eyelashes and creepy smile as she let him pass said it all.

Surprisingly, Woohyun came up to Sunggyu in full school uniform for the first time in ages. With a smirk, Woohyun tugged at the collar on his blazer in emphasis of his suited-up glory. Sunggyu shook his head, but smiled a little. He then grasped the top of Woohyun’s tie and gently ran his long fingers down the silky material until the tie ended, at Woohyun’s lower abdomen, his eyes not leaving Woohyun’s for a second. Woohyun swallowed thickly, already feeling a little dizzy at the teasing feeling of Sunggyu’s fingertips.

‘It actually looks good on you,’ Sunggyu said lowly, his fingers travelling back up the tie to pull it up a bit, until it was tight enough to fit snugly in the white collar.

Woohyun had a sinful glint in his eyes as his finger hooked into the exposed belt loop of Sunggyu’s trousers. ‘Thanks, SPB. It looks pretty good on you too,’ he complimented playfully.

Sunggyu pushed him away.

Close by and watching carefully were Myungsoo and Sungyeol. While they watched the flirting, the fucking sexual tension that was so thick it could be sliced like fudge brownies, Myungsoo’s hand unconsciously felt at his collar. His eyes then widened.

He fucking forgot his tie.

‘Shit!’ he cursed loudly, alerting Sungyeol who was staring at the other pair.

Sungyeol turned around and realised what he was swearing about. ‘You’re an idiot!’ he hissed, watching as Myungsoo gaped at thin air.

Myungsoo then felt a hand being pushed into his stomach, and in the hand was a navy tie. His eyes followed the arm and realised that Howon had stripped off his own tie and was handing it to him like the saint that Sungyeol thought he was.

Myungsoo tried to protest, ‘But -‘

‘Shut up and put it on,’ Howon grunted, not allowing any room for leeway. He let the tie drop at Myungsoo’s feet, inevitably making the younger boy pick it up and slip it over his head.

Five minutes passed and they were to enter, class by class. Sungyeol’s class was first, Myungsoo’s was second and eventually, Howon’s had to enter. Howon put on a calm exterior as he tried to walk into the gym without being noticed. However, he was discovered easily before he was able to pass.

‘Lee Howon, where is your tie?’ the teacher on duty spat.

Howon didn’t answer.

The teacher, Mr Park, emphasised sternly, ‘I’m not letting you in without your tie.’

Howon was about to lie about leaving his tie at home or something along those lines, but Sunggyu stepped out of the line and called out, ‘Mr Park.’

Sunggyu gave him a quick glance - and even though it lasted only a split second, Howon knew it meant You usually are not this irresponsible, you piece of forgetful shit - before Sunggyu leaned over and whispered into the teacher’s ear.

Mr Park frowned but still sighed, ‘Don’t forget it at your next exam,’ and let Howon pass.

‘Yes, sir,’ Howon acknowledged politely.

-

‘How’d you do?’ was the first thing Woohyun asked after he found Sunggyu, right after the exam was over.

Sunggyu shrugged. ‘I struggled a little bit,’ he exaggerated. He fucking flew through it, as expected.

Woohyun gasped in mock surprise, ‘Really?’

‘Oh yeah,’ Sunggyu exclaimed sarcastically in return, playfully punching Woohyun’s arm.

‘I’m sure you aced it,’ Woohyun reassured. They began walking towards the main school building together, side-by-side.

‘How was it?’ Sunggyu questioned, not really sure what that smile on Woohyun’s face meant.

‘Eh.’

‘Eh?’

‘It means I don’t know, but fingers crossed.’

-

After his last exam of the day, Sunggyu strolled through the school gates exhaling a breath he was holding. As he turned he found Doojoon leaning against the red bricks.

‘Hey,’ the other greeted with a smile, rubbing the back of his head.

Sunggyu tilted his head at him and returned the smile. ‘You haven’t left for home yet?’ By his body language, Sunggyu could tell he was waiting for him.

‘No, uh, I was wondering…’ Doojoon cleared his throat. ‘Could I please have your address?’

Well, that was straightforward. Sunggyu said slowly, not sure what the other was implying, ‘I’m sorry?’

‘No! No, I didn’t meant it in a bad way. My father works for a company that makes resource books for school. He was given some Mandarin books, but I’m not learning Mandarin so they’re no use to me… I thought I could mail them out to you, if you want me to, I mean,’ Doojoon explained in panic, his brain muddled up. It was stupidly obvious that he had a thing for Sunggyu - whether the thing was a thing or a phobia was a mystery at the moment.

‘Well, that’s very thoughtful,’ Sunggyu replied cheerily, ‘I could type the address in your phone, if you’d like.’

‘Y - Yeah, here.’ Doojoon handed Sunggyu his phone and watched him type the address in. Sunggyu also gave Doojoon his number because he for some reason felt somewhat guilty for Doojoon waiting for him for so long, even if it was his decision to.

Doojoon cleared his throat again and said, implicating that he was leaving, ‘See you when we go back to school, I guess?’

‘Sure,’ Sunggyu said without hesitation. He quite liked talking to Doojoon, actually.

When he left, Sunggyu heard rustling in the garden bed on the school-side of the brick wall. Sunggyu immediately rolled his eyes and huffed loudly, ‘Don’t -‘

‘I wasn’t going to.’ He should’ve known Howon would witness the whole thing without being noticed.

Sunggyu gave Howon the don’t you dare even mention what you just saw look and Howon just looked amusedly back at him, without a care about all the pursuers Sunggyu didn’t believe were chasing after him.

Whilst they began to walk to Sunggyu’s house - Myungsoo wasn’t with them because he kidnapped Sungyeol and took him somewhere that no one must’ve knew of - Howon grew curious and asked, ‘What did you tell him?’ (He was a kind enough friend to not talk about Doojoon, for now anyway.)

Sunggyu yawned, ‘Who?’ He had talked to more than one male that day.

‘Mr Park.’

A smile graced Sunggyu’s lips as he remembered the exact moment he leaned into Mr Parks musky, old-man scent and whispered the one word that had every teacher sighing in defeat in front of Sunggyu.

‘Honestly?’ Sunggyu quipped.

Howon nodded once, Sunggyu’s expression only making him even more curious.

‘Please.’

Sunggyu barely ever asked for anything or pleaded for anything, so when he said please, just a slightly dragged out simple syllable, he got what he wanted. Always.

‘So the student body president must be submissive to get results?’

‘The student body president must persuade to get results, Howon. The word just happens to be the shortest way of doing so.’

Howon scoffed.
