No matter how close Samus got to that park she was told about, something railroaded her efforts to plant the sodding tomato seeds. This time, it wasn't the city leading her astray. It wasn't even her hands requiring a bandage change.
Somewhere in her mind, the idea of staying in one place and growing some plants disturbed her greatly, like she was surrendering to the city. Not the church, but the city. The relief she'd felt when she first arrived and was informed that nothing could escape had all but vanished.
So, given the choice between growing something to eat that didn't taste like an ancient penny and going to explore 'just one more thing'...well, that's how she ended up wandering more corridors in another institution.
The excursion had absolutely no points of interest until Samus saw some light from the corner of her eye. She really, really wanted to follow it, but her hands were hardly in a combat-ready state. If whatever was making the light was after a fight...
Oh, screw it. She walked towards the light as quietly as possible, until it was obvious that it was coming from a particular room, then asked, "Anyone there?"
At least asking from a distance would give her a better chance of successfully running away if she had to.
Someone other than himself was in the school. How interesting that experiment A01... oh, wait. He had set the dog loose in the school grounds with instructions not to go out past the gates. It was likely that it was still near the greenhouse, if it wasn't dead yet.
Saa. Usually he didn't care for human contact but he didn't have anything else better to do anyway.
"In here," he rasped out, his dry and scratchy throat not allowing him to speak properly.
"I guess, if being alive counts as 'okay.'" Nii smirked cynically. "And just so you know, you can't die of starvation here. Damn is this place screwed up."
Can't die? That's lovely, I got blisters on my hands for nothing. Wait... "How long has it been since you had anything to eat? Or drink?" Or gotten off that couch?
Ah, the name question. Every time she answered it, the unease from being dishonest was easier to handle. It shouldn't be. "I'm Sam. It's nice to meet you, uh..."
"Count those. I think there are fourteen strokes now."
Nii lazily pointed at the coffee table in front of the couch that he was lying down on. On the small space within arm's reach that wasn't covered with ash, paper, and beer cans were several notches on the wood. A pocketknife was sticking out of the latest one.
"I'm Nii." He gestured to the armchair adjacent to the couch. "Sit down if you will; it's a bit difficult to strain my neck."
...oh, Robin had said something about a Nii. He had a list of people who he suspected were affiliated with the church. The only thing for sure was that Nii was a scientist. That was enough for Samus to not trust this guy as far as she could throw him...unless there was another Nii running around the city, but that was unlikely.
Still, he was in need of aid. He wasn't dead, but he'd still starved and been dehydrated for two weeks. At this point, he was hardly a threat. Samus slid her backpack off and sat down in the armchair.
"I'm sorry I don't have any food with me." No way was she going to carry frozen meat next to her back.
((OOC: There are so many Monty Python references I could make right now, but I just can't choose. NOTDEADYETKNIGHTSWHOSAYNIIBRAVESIRROBINRANAWAY *faint*))
Nii chuckled before grabbing a few pillows to prop himself up. "Should it matter if you did? It'll just be gone again, and where will that leave you?" Oh, yes, he was in another one of his darker moods again.
He studied his visitor as well as he could for someone with his state of health. "Travelling much, hmm?"
Where would sharing food leave Samus, anyway? It was a certainty that she'd be off looking for food again no matter what - the only thing that would change is when that would happen.
The fact that she could only carry a limited supply of food and water with her drove her to keep wandering, and if there was one thing she could do here that she used to do before, it was to not stay in one place. It was one of the few things keeping her relatively sane.
"Always. It seems most people here have found a place they can at least consider a shelter." She couldn't help the smile that crept to her face. "I'm not most people." In ways I hope you never figure out.
"What about you?" she asked in the hopes of steering the conversation away from her. "Why didn't you go looking for more supplies as soon as you ran out?"
((OOC: Internet playing up. Totally screwed with my caffeine high, which is when my muse is a viking. If not back for four days, at least I have an excuse this time.))
'Not most people' was a rather vague and misleading statement, but he wasn't worried about that too much. There will be time...
He considered the question. True, he didn't go out of laziness, but even that didn't usually prevent him from going down to the castle's kitchens for a quick bite. This experience, however, had answered the question of what would happen if the City was really empty of food and certain stubborn individuals would refuse to go to certain places for help. They wouldn't die, to say the least. Ah, but there were other things to account for.
((ooc: Good luck~))
Hmm? Oh yes, there was that query to answer. "I was bored," he said, and the laughter that followed was dry and scratchy, closer to a cough than anything else.
"Uh huh." Samus sat there for a while, not saying anything else. Apparently, boredom was quite an infectious mood.
The thought occurred to her...if she just sat there doing nothing, when would it stop? She didn't want to be stuck in one place, perpetually dying for weeks or even months. Certainly not here, with Nii for company. She had to do something. "Is there anything I could help you with? If not...I have to say, there's far less awkward rooms I'd rather be sitting in."
Nii laughed. "No, no, I won't keep you here." A hand was waved lazily in the air. "Be careful on your way out. I've been hearing interesting noises outside as of late."
Experiment A01 was getting creative, perhaps. The greenhouses and the botany lab were also likely to be lively; he never did get around to injecting one or two plants with a growth inhibitor. Oh, well.
"Thanks for the warning." Samus stood up and picked up her backpack. Judging by the fact that the tomato seed packet slipped out and fell on the ground, she'd forgotten to zip it up properly earlier that day.
"Damn," she muttered as she bent over to pick the seeds up. With them in hand, she nodded to Nii and walked out, heading...wherever.
"Bai-bai~" Nii murmured, waving a limp hand before resting it again on his chest. A small, spider-like plantling crawled onto the couch he was lying on and tilted its head - no, its body inquisitively. It took only an affirming nod to send the small creature out the door and after Samus, stalking her primarily for information. As for other things, well... Nii would see what would happen.
He wondered when more interesting times would come again.
