The streets of New York are a dangerous place to be in the middle of the night, but the young man- just barely a man, more of a boy, really- showed no fear. He watched the him tap out a beat on the old pickle tub between his knees as late night passers-by offered him scraps of money for his troubles. He was obviously homeless, playing for tidbits because he had no place to sleep for the night or maybe he just liked it. It was hard to tell with people in this city. The poor and pathetic races of New York- the homeless, the addicted, the infected, and more besides- were like their own separate race of humanity.
He identified with them in a way. He was a separate race within his own breed too, after all.
He flickered briefly out of the shadows to add a ten-dollar bill to the boy’s tiny pile, but apparently wasn’t quick enough, despite being faster than any mere mortal, to escape his inquisitive eyes.
"You okay, honey?" He asked him, almost knowingly. Here he was, poor and homeless, playing for spare change on the street, and he wanted to know if he was okay.
"Yeah," he responded, shoving his hands further into his coat. "I’m fine."
The boy nodded and jerked his head in the direction of the money. "Well, thanks for that. Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas," he muttered under his breath in reply, before heading off down the street. He wasn’t ten steps away when the boy called after him.
"What’s your name, honey?"
He stopped and looked over his shoulder onto the face of this strange boy who seemed so strong and brave for a human who had nothing to call his own and probably everything to fear. "It’s Angel."
The boy’s smile widened. "Mine too."
