I figured out the way to make my novel more effective would be to either a) re-write the whole thing back into third person or b) create a parallel universe where there are two main characters telling the story. I'm working on option "b" but it'll probably turn into a train wreck so having to go back and re-write every pronoun is a bit daunting, but it's the only way.
