This one is about those tired flame wars that have occasionally flared up over the years.
Really, I have tried to stay out of those Spike vs the other character of the debates, because hey--the show is long over-- but then someone will do something, like that AR icon or Amber Benson talking about how wonderful and healthy the Willow/Tara ship was (while everyone agrees)and it's damn annoying.
Why can't I just let it be?
I think the reason why this bothers me is because the OTHER ships aren't like Spuffy. When Angel and Buffy were together, he had his soul. So, he goes off acting like an ass as Angelus, (killing Buffy's friends, torturing her watcher) and he's excused for it because...HEY, he's ANgelus not Angel.
Then you have Willow/Tara. Willow had a soul, but she was ADDICTED to magic. (In other words, she wasn't herself) So, they are considered healthy because got off the magic crack and wasn't enticing her girlfriend to have sex with her by drugging her into forgetting with Magic.
There's Anya/Xander. She was a demon, and she had maimed and killed hundreds of men, and really didn't have any real remorse over it.. Nobody really brings up that they weren't a healthy ship. In fact, most of us think Xander was the ass to her.
So, what's the thing with Spuffy? Is it because Buffy jumped on his pole and rode him like a pony when he didn't have a soul? Is it because the writers enticed us as fans to ship them by making him have glimpses of true goodness? (the INTERVENTION thing with Dawn, his staying and helping the scoobies in spite of Buffy's death. After Buffy's resurrection, his genuine hurt over Xander telling him to get lost now, they've used him enough?) Yes, he tried to rape her without a soul.. Yes, she beat the shit out of him (And Buffy with a soul) so who was the bad guy here? As a viewer, I wanted them BOTH to get out of that BAD PLACE and they did it--together! To me, that was a story about redemption and love, but apparently to some others, we who ship them are sick fuckers. Not to mention, Spike's attempted rape of Buffy is always used to press a hot button, since apparently every other character in the verse was a saint.
So why is this ship the one that always gets a piss taken on them while the other ones get a free pass?
ANyone got any explanations?
