Swing Shift

Oct 15, 2009 13:29

Working noon to 8pm here at GeneriCo is going to be weird. I've done the swing shift before, in NYC, but there, as we know, it's the (*gag*) "City That Never Sleeps". Here, it's the "Town That Dies At Rush Hour".

Seriously, folks, I'm at the edge of the so-called Financial District near the Aquarium, and this neighborhood totally rolls up its sidewalks at 5pm. I go to lunch at 4, and most of the cheap sandwich places and pizza places and salad places are already closed! The places that are open are pubs and tourist restaurants, and they're too expensive for lunch. Plus, going to a pub and not having a beer would make me sad. :(

It's no biggie, really. I'll just either buy something on the way to work and keep it in the fridge, or pack myself a sandwich to bring in. No, I do not want a bento box. The very thought of prepping all those fiddly little bits makes me want to run riot with a cleaver. Strange thing is, without going out to lunch, I have no reason to go out at all. I'm not smoking, remember? No smoke breaks! No nice, leisurely cig standing outside watching the world go by, before work or during lunch or whenever. It's so true that the nicotine addiction is one thing to break, but it's the habit I miss most. Yeah, I have the e-cig, but honestly, I'm finding it's not quite the same thing. It's good for when I really need it, but it doesn't have the same feeling. It is the lack of nicotine -- I'm not getting that feeling of satisfaction and relaxation and being on a "break" -- but I also really miss the smoke burn in my throat. Yeah, I'm a weirdo. *shrug*

So anyway. The good news is, they seem to like me here. They've already given me a permanent building pass, and they're talking about sending me to Philadelphia for training on certain systems. No shit! That is not the kind of investment you make in someone who's going to stay temp for long. So my fingers are crossed that sooner or later they'll put me on salary and I'll get lots of money and health insurance and I'll finally be able to exhale and have a bit of security in my life.

Yesterday, I actually learned something new. Woo hoo! I learned how to search and retrieve patents! And today I've reformatted a 722 page set of interrogatories. Because I AM THAT GOOD.

ETA: They want me to go to Philadelphia Tuesday and Wednesday of NEXT WEEK. @_@

work, this is me not smoking
