"Scars," A Winsister Fanmix, and a link to the story it inspired, for bigbang_mixup

Jul 30, 2013 03:01

My second mix for bigbang_mixup 2013, "Scars." I consider it a Winsister fanmix for "Supernatural," although a particular theme emerged that may not apply to all Winsisters.

We didn't get an assigned artist, so I made the art for all of this. First, the fanmix.

Some songs were chosen for their attitude ("No Duh"). Others were chosen for their theme fitting what it means to be a Winsister and how it disrupts your life ("Boys in Town"). Then I started thinking about Girl!Sam and Girl!Dean. How would Girl!Sam feel knowing (perhaps just in her own mind) that she has failed her brother more than once (especially with Ruby and the demon blood addiction)? What would she say to try to win back his trust? What if they were involved in a Wincestuous relationship, how would that change the kind of things she would say? What would Dean say back to her? You could flip genders in other ways and many of the songs still would apply since both Dean and Sam feel they have failed the other multiple times. There is also the theme of wanting things, and people, that you cannot have, or maybe shouldn't want. (Wincest, or the constant travel keeping you from relationships, or just wanting to be the kind of sister or brother who won't fail the other)

One of my favorite lyrics from this list is from Fiona Apple's song, "Criminal":

"What would an angel say, the devil wants to know?"

Tell me THAT doesn't fit SPN to a tee! Especially when you consider Sam is sometimes jealous over Dean listening to and confiding in Castiel over him, and Sam is Lucifer's vessel.

The mix also takes some inspiration from one of my own Winsisters, Kerry, who will probably get her own mix someday just 'cause.

Then there was the idea of the Winsister being a third sibling (well, fourth, technically) and the hunting life messing up her chances of having a normal relationship. What if she found someone who was perfect for her, but screwed everything up? This is where enochiansigils's story comes in.

All I Ever Knew by enochiansigils
Original Winsister/OFC, Rated Teen+

enochiansigils picked actress Rachel Skarsten as the model for Meredith Winchester, and actress Katie McGrath for the OFC she gets involved with, Audrey. That is why you see them as part of the art. I found a pic of Rachel kissing the lead character from "Lost Girl," who also has a slender build and dark hair like Katie, so I figured it would be a great pic to use for the art as well. Brushes in Paint Shop Pro helped me create the interesting borders around the pics.

Here's a much bigger version, which can be considered the "book cover."

And a MUCH bigger version for those of us with wide resolution monitors *raises hand* (click the thumb to make it REALLY big):

This one adds Sam and Dean into the art and also makes reference to the Monster of the Week, a radiant boy. (See how he glows?) The b&w art of the boy and his shadowy mother, along with the borders on the right and left sides, come from a children's book called Tales of Terror from the Tunnel's Mouth by Chris Priestley. The art seemed to fit well. I just added a glow around his head to make him radiant, haha.

Phew! I think that's it. I really enjoyed working with you, enochiansigils! It was a blast! Love working with people who are on the same wavelength as me. ^_^

I hope you enjoy everything here!
