seems like your better half said it all

Some of the closing words of a book I recently finished read

“What value can one ordinary man have in a magical world? What can a mortal bring to the affairs of immortals? Insight. Honor. Morality. Perspective.
Because nothing makes love and life matter more than the knowledge that someday, it must end.”

Now this struck me as profound but perhaps not right. For who says love must end? Another theme that occurs in the book is “mortal must never love immortal.” Yes it is a fantasy novel, so shoot me. Anyways, I was thinking about that and perhaps, it to is untrue, perhaps each of us has a mortal and immortal part to us. Now I do not mean like a soul in the religious sense, no other world. I have pondered the idea of another dimension but it seems a far and outrageous stretch. But perhaps those two parts are both necessary for love. For one part to love another perhaps mortal loving mortal, then that results in lust, and passion, but it ends. Immortal loving immortal, might begin as passion but maybe that is the base of our true friends and our “soul mates” as they are called. Those people who we can happily spend the rest of our lives with are those people whom we love, immortal to immortal and mortal to mortal. Ties that bind forever. Ties as intangible as the sky and as felt as the silky touch of skin on skin.

Or I read way too much into things. Either way, some food for thought. Feel free to mull and share with me.

The book by the way was very good. I recommend it to all. It is called “drinking midnight wine” by Simon R. Green.

Hell, maybe love is meant to end, like all things. To give it meaning.
