"Phone me for tragedy"
There was the phone call. The final word so to speak being a dull click and a buzz that went on and on and on. He sat stunned. Stood. Walked across the room, stubbing his toe on the way. Kept going with a slight drag in his walk. Picked up a pen and walked into and then out of the door. At the morgue he looked into the room saw her on the table, nodded once and continued to stare, but he was no longer seeing the room. Instead he was remembering the last time he had seen her. It could not have been more than eight hours ago.
He started up from his sleep as the suitcase hit the coffee table in front of the couch he is laying on.
“Kirsten, what are you doing?!”
“What does it look like I am doing?” she replied sharply “I am leaving.”
“B-B-But why?” he stuttered
“Because I don’t feel like spending the night near you. I am going to stay with Cindy until you apologize for what you said.”
“Why should I have to apologize!?” He retorted “You lashed out at me!” He reaches out to her. “Come on, this is dumb. We can’t have this big of an argument about nothing.
“No.” she says and knocks his hand away roughly. “It is not about nothing, I don’t think you respect me.”
“I DON’T RESPECT YOU!!” He roared, genuinely hurt and offended to a high degree. “Fine.” He said, suddenly quieting. “Leave if you think so. You deserve a relationship where you are respected.”
Seeing the sudden change and realizing a bit to late what she had done she half reached out to him then stubbornly shook her head, picked up her bag and walked out. Leaving him sitting on the couch. He cocked his head slightly when he heard the engine start up and the tires squeal. Then he slept.
It all ended too fast. It is too impossible. It is all a bad dream it has to be. These were his thoughts as he drove home and slipped the key into his door and sat on the couch, slouching, defeated. He looked down and realized he is sitting exactly where he sat the night she left, for the last time. Then he cried. He cried for a long time.
“This is really happening!!” he howled over and over again. He cried as he walked to the hardware store. Sobbed as he checked out, wept as he tied the rope and moaned as he climbed onto the chair. Then as he foot hovered in open air, the coil heavy around his neck, the nine ring knot heavy at his back he smiled sadly and took his final step he whispered
“I’ll be seeing you.”
