The eight year-old princess briefly made eye contact with Iroh as she passed the room he was in. General Iroh noticed the mischievous grin on his niece’s face. As always, Azula was up to no good.
Lately the child had made a habit of causing havoc around him. She seemed to be too precocious for it to be coincidence. Every time he brought up it up with Ozai, his younger brother would just blow if off, like it was nothing worth noticing. Princess Azula was immune to parental discipline. It annoyed Iroh. He suspected she knew it.
If that was her plot, beyond being a rather petty one, it wasn’t well thought out, she wasn’t entirely correct. Ozai’s ambivalence towards Azula’s misbehavior did bother him. But he was also bothered by how much his younger brother praised the girl’s beauty, intelligence, and talent.
But deep down Azula’s behavior didn’t bother Iroh too much. It was a product of her immaturity, he believed. Lu Ten had been the same way when he was two. The boy even wore the same grin as his niece. Lu Ten grew out of it, eventually. Iroh hoped Azula would too.
He took a sip of jasmine tea, and thought of how he needed to teach Azula the errors of her ways. His lesson would be strategic and discrete -Ozai would be none the wiser. Iroh would become the authority figure his niece needed.
