Gendo wanted to fix the world. His goal was to restore it to how it had been before the angels had arrived. He believed that he is capable of recreating the wonders and even making new ones. At least that’s what Shinji had been told to explain his father’s absence.
Even at a young age, his father’s ambition seemed flawed and hypocritical. It was impossible for someone who couldn’t even establish a simple connection with his own son to achieve that much. It’s not that Gendo didn’t try to fix their relationship; it was that he just didn’t know how to go about it. When the boy was an adolescent, he even had the boy relocated closer to him.
Instead of the life he had hoped for, all Gendo managed to recreate were the nightmares Shinji had faced as a young child. The seam that was holding the relationship was damaged beyond repair.
