"You're free you to go," the soldier said.
Ursa took a deep breath and the smell of the air brought back memories of her carefree days as a child.
She remembered spending most of her time with her grandmother, Ta Min. She had heard many tales of life before the war from her. One in particular stuck with her, it always made her feel uncomfortable.
"It was a long time ago when I was young," Ta Min said to her grandchild. "There were dragons who roamed the land. They were large and they were very beautiful. Your grandfather had a dragon even.”
Ursa's eyes got wide, she had seen pictures of dragons before. They seemed so unreal.
“But after your grandfather passed,” Ta Min explained. “The Fire Lord began encouraging the people to hunt dragons. Before there had been a sacred law against it. Just as before most of our contact with the outside world was through trade and treaties. Reports began coming in of dishonorable acts taking place during combat. As the dragon population dwindled, the number of reports of dishonorable combat among Fire Nation soldiers increased. Pretty soon nobody cared.”
This was were Ursa always felt the saddest and most helpless.
“And that is why you, my dear must always care.”
As a child Ursa never really understood what the tale meant but now, after being banished from her nation she now realizing the underling truth her grandmother told her. Ursa felt that she had more freedom after being sent into exile than she ever had in her entire life in the Fire Nation.
