So last week.. or maybe it was the week before, I forget.. I bit the bullet and hacked my PSP's firmware to the latest m33 variant. It had been sitting at 2.71 forever. Ironically, the reason I hacked it was because I wanted to run some of the latest games on it, pretty much the opposite of the typical piracy line. So now I've got a completely open piece of kit that I'm using to play Metal Gear Ac!d 2.
Frankly, the PSP homebrew scene seems to be a bit of a disaster. Since Sony has changed their firmware quite a bit since the PSP was first released, it's hit and miss which homebrew will work with the latest kernels. And there are complications. Some apps run in kernel mode, which ties them to particular kernel versions, while other apps run in user mode. Few things are properly labelled. There are different nomenclatures for the different series of kernel numbers and different ways you can get homebrew running on them. The only things that are straight-forward, label-wise, are when things run under 1.50 firmware.. and that's a firmware that doesn't even work on the latest PSPs (slim). So it's not exactly a great situation.
That having been said, I've started digging into what it would take to write some stuff of my own. Besides an idea.
Anywho, I'm finding MGA2 to be a lot of fun. But then, I'm all for anything crossed with a card game.. ;) I'm sure it'd be a lot more interesting if I'd played through the MGS games already, but I'm not sure yet whether or not I want to go back to them. Either way, I'll at least have the opportunity in a few weeks. (Ordered some extension cables for my gamecube controllers so I could play from the couch. Not a big fan of playing from the floor.)
Oh, I started into FFIX a few days ago on my PS3. Really fine game.. loving it to bits already. It's just a shame I won't be able to play it again for a month..
