So there's a link that just popped up on digg to an article called
The 9 Most Racist Disney Characters.. it's an interesting read, although if you've watched any of the more well known Disney movies, I'm sure that you can name at least half of 'em on their list. (The other half are well before my time..) I've already mentioned the Indians in Peter Pan here, but the one that really interests me is the censoring of the introductory theme from Aladdin.
Basically, there's a line in there that goes "where they'll cut off your ear if they don't like your face, it's barbaric, but hey, it's home." That's been changed to "where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense" ... I think the change in line does the movie a slight disservice. The original line can be interpreted as hyperbole, and it foreshadows a moment later on in the movie where Jasmine's hand is placed on the chopping block.
Frankly, it's the kind of revisionism that reminds me of the whole 'Han shot first' debacle.
But then, hey, maybe I'm just over-sensitive to the change because I had the sheet music when I was younger, and that was one of my favorite songs..
