I used to not like movies all that much. Sure, I had a few favorites, but for the most part, movies didn’t interest me. They were all the same plots with the same shitty ass actors who do the same shitty ass thing. Some movies are designed for different things. Joe Dirt is designed to be a stupid comedy, and it succeeds pretty well at that, but others you wonder how in the hell it got the green light. I used to go to the movies so I could see larger than life stories be brought to life, but as of recent, I’ve grown weary of the monotony that film has become. I felt this way until last night.
I went by the media library on campus and picked up a personal favorite, Shakespeare in Love. It’s a wonderful movie with great cinematography, great acting, and really solid story. I was reminded again last night why I love that movie so much. That film is really a breath of fresh air because it breaks out of the usual trend that Hollywood seems to love. After finishing, I thought back over some of the other films I’ve seen that I thought were really good. The Wallace and Gromit movie was hysterical, and I suggest you all go see that if you can. It was just…clever. And that’s nice to see. Usually for something to be funny anymore it has to be crude, or poking fun at someone else’s expense, or just being over the top.
Before watching Shakespeare in Love last night, I watched Rent with a few friends in one of our lounges. I was lucky enough to see the show on Broadway, but I hadn’t seen the film yet. It wasn’t bad. It has great music in it, I liked the way it was shot, and some of the musical numbers were really fun. It wasn’t great, but I don’t think a movie like that is designed to be. It was actually like watching a music video.
I realized that although I don’t like a lot of the stuff that the film industry puts out, it’s nice to know there are a few movies that will give you something to watch. Even if it’s 1 out of 100, that’s fine with me.
