Much though I have cribbed about being away from school and hating Singapore, being in a different environment has shown me a completely different set of people.
I love Stanford but people's kindness here is amazing. They do small random things that make me sit back and think how different we are at Stanford. The first day at work my co-intern helped me through all my logisitics without even me asking him to. Yesterday when the co-intern, me and a friend of his were hanging out he paid the tab for our meal and dessert without letting us pay at all. the beauty is not that I got a free dinner but that here was a guy who was just geenrous without ANY ulterior motives. His simple logic was, you earn your own money, this money isn't mine, its just given to me.
At work, my boss talks to me between work meetings. He'll ask me how I am, give me a compliment when I look good and is so concerned with my general well being. When he found out that I wanted to see some places he sent me a list of travel sites. He himself suggested I should take my mother on a trip to the nearby islands without once worrying about the leave I would have to take.
Just small selfless things like that make my day.
I love Stanford and can not wait to return but the small heart of guys, the work oriented concern of co-workers or superiors, the general self sufficiency is all too evident to me now.
