Her hair sticks to her forehead, wet and heavy with sweat. Elizabeth crushes my hand in hers and pushes away from me. The next contraction assaults her and she crumples.
"John?" she pleads. Elizabeth's eyes should never be that terrified. "John?"
Dropping to the floor and taking her head in my hands, I hold her steady. She screams and shivers.
My forehead sticks to hers. "I'm here."
Her fear melts from her face and my own settles in my gut like icewater. That look disarms me every time.
"Hey," she murmurs as her eyes focus on mine. "There you are."
