For those who were wondering what the big secret has been all week, here it is!
I served my notice to the RR this morning that I was going to be leaving and that Saturday night was going to be my last night.
Normally it is good manners to give two weeks notice, but the company has a policy of termination upon notification. That is to say the moment you tell them you are leaving they escort you to the door and you are gone. That is because the position is mission critical and they don't normally allow someone to occupy the position who they can't hold accountable for his actions the next day.
I half expected to show up for work this afternoon only to find that I didn't have a job. But it turns out that I guess they feel I am not going to bum around all night and ignore problems that come up.
So Saturday night is my last night with the RR. I have to admit I will miss some of the things about this job. I will miss the peace and quiet of the graveyard shift. I will miss 4-day weekends. I will miss the neat gifts the RR gives us every Christmas. I will miss the huuuuuuge electric trains that they build in the lobby during the holiday season. I will miss sleeping as long as I want every day when working night shift.
Some things I won't miss though....
I will not miss being away from home half the week. I will not miss having to get up at 2am on Monday morning when I am working day shift. I will not miss Atlanta traffic. I will not miss MARTA,
So why did I take the job?
Sleeping at home in my own bed every night.
Spending every evening with my family.
Lower costs.
Less driving.
More money.
Doing something I enjoy.
Able to commit to activities in church and around town because I have a real routine and predictable rate of income (salaried position).
Only working 8 hours a day (as opposed to the 12 I am working at the RR) and having part of each day for myself and family.
Telecommuting if the weather is bad.
And now, since I still have two more nights for the RR, let me get back to work. :D
