So here we are in the holiday season and my thoughts drift back to times long past.
I recall once in the early 1980s when Jim and I had drawn a Christmas Eve alert. It was common for single guys to pull alert on Christmas so that married guys could stay home with family. In this case not only had we pulled a Christmas Eve alert, but changeover was delayed on Christmas Day so that the families could have the morning together. We didn't really mind that.
But by the time we had returned to the base, the chow hall had closed. And that we DID mind! So here was a couple of missile troops who had just come off duty, were hungry and couldn't find any place to eat open on Christmas Day. We had to settle for going by a Quick Trip and picking up some hotdogs, mustard, buns and microwavable fries. Yep, that was our Christmas Dinner.
So to all the single men and women out there putting it on the line so that families can spend Christmas time together, thanks.
