Another scam attempt

It all started about a week ago.  Jan and I got home from someplace and there was a message on the answering machine.  Discover Financial had called and asked me to call them back.
Well I had very little desire to call them so that they could subject me to a sales pitch for some useless program that they wanted to enroll me in and charge my card every month for.  So I felt no guilt whatsoever in ignoring the message.

A few days later they called again.  Again, we weren't home, and again I felt no obligation to return the call.

Then on Tuesday, they called and Jan was home.  I was in Florida.  So Jan took the number and passed it to me.  Since I was not really doing too much other than sitting in a hotel room watching TV, I decided to officially decline their offer.

So I dialed them up at the number they gave Jan.  They asked me why I was calling and I told them that I was returning their call.  After a moment, they informed me that I had missed a payment on my card, and they wanted to arrange for an over the phone draft of my account to catch up the payments.

Now I knew darn good and well that I had not missed any payments.  So with the guy there on the phone, I got online and checked my bank records.  Sure enough, the payment was made and cleared on time and on target.  I was telling the fellow on the phone that I had a confirmation from the bank that the bill had been paid, and about that time the call on my cell phone dropped.

So I dialed the customer service number on the back of my card.  I got an automated system that informed me what my balance was and that no payments were due at the time.  Then I got a customer service rep on the phone and told her what had just happened.  She confirmed that I did not miss any payments and that everything was in order.  She then passed me to the fraud dept.  I told them the phone number that the caller had given Jan and they told me that that was NOT a discover card number.

Well, as you can imagine, it was not long before they called again.  This time I called them out.  I told them that I had confirmed with my bank that the bill had been paid, confirmed with discover card customer service that there was no  outstanding balance, and confirmed with discover card security that the phone number they were using was not a discover card phone number.  I accused them of running a scam and told them to stop bothering us.

We have not heard back from them.

The sad thing is I wonder how many people allowed themselves to get pressured into giving up their checking account information.
