street food

Here are some very big beans:

They sell them in huge metal vats, sometimes from tiny shops along side streets, and sometimes from carts parked on the sidewalks of popular pedestrian areas. They're pretty tasty, for beans: fibrous skins and soft, warm interiors. I'm sharing this portion with Annika (that's her hand there), and we've covered our beans with za'atar, because that's what you do. (Za'atar. It's the best.) You eat 'em with your fingers - or, at least, the vendor didn't give us any utensils!

I'm going to make an effort to take more pictures of street food vendors here, because it's something unique to this area, but universal at the same time: every culture and place has its street food. Here you can get everything from beans to turnips soaked in date juice, to falafel, to tea (in the glasses, like in my icon up there - the guy has a little washstand set up, too).

So, you can hold me to that little project. :)

good food, kurdish culture, pictures
