It's still only 4 o'clock???!!!

How do you stop the afternoon ticking on one painful minute after another? Well - this is what I did. I started off just writing the beginning to any story -the first words to enter my head. Then I thought I’d be interesting to make it kind of Choose Your Own Adventure style…

So, read the start of the story and let me know which of the choices you want to go with at the end and I’ll carry on writing it on Monday when I return to this desk and start clock-watching again.

Have a good weekend xxx

Where do you start?
How do you even begin to explain?!

Anyone half-decent would think you were crazy. A week ago you’d think you were crazy.

But that was a week ago - you were a different person then.

We all were.

A week ago, you were worried about whether it was your turn to get the pay rise - whether being late 3 days out of 5 really made a difference. A week ago, the news about fuel tax prices was enough to make you angry. A few pence per litre was enough to put you in a ranting rage for three hours or more as you slowly wound your way along the M42 to another pointless meeting in another pointless town.

Where were they now? Those faceless middle managers; those nameless HR ‘generalists’ that were so concerned about whether a picture of lemons really said enough about what their company stands for. You don’t know if it stands at all anymore - you haven’t heard. You’d swear your ears were no longer working with the silence that has descended over your world. If it wasn’t for the guttural, ethereal noises that intermittently pierced the silence, anyway.

So, what now? You can’t go home - it’s not for you.
You can’t turn to anyone - who can help you?
You can’t end it - you don’t know how to.

Just as the darkness and solitude start to envelop you like a cloak and you get ready to descend into the spiral of oblivion you know you must ultimately face, a cone of light stabs through the night and scans across the undergrowth, getting ever stronger and closer. Shielding your eyes from the alien illumination, you see another cone of light parallel to the first one, tracing back to the large, dark hulk of a car that’s slowly winding it’s way towards you.

The sight seems so unnatural given the state of things. What it’s doing here is anyone’s guess - what could the driver be thinking?! As much as you want to yank the driver out of the car and give them a hard slap just for sheer stupidity, getting angry won’t change the situation - you’re going to have to deal with this, and none of your options seem appealing right now:

1 Hide from the car till it passes
2 Flag it down and risk facing whoever’s inside?
3 Make sure the car stops permanently - it’s unlikely, but they could be the ones responsible for all this.

Well? Answers in the comments box and I’ll go with the most popular option…
