Ignorance is fucking intolerable
Quote just heard on the radio from a news story interviewing local people in Peterborough:
"I don't mind coloureds so much but it's the Pakistanis. There's too many of them - they're wrecking out country."
Wrecking our country?!!!
By working 5 days a week, paying my taxes and supporting the economy I'm wrecking the country?!
By having a career in which I promote jobs, encourage people to develop their skills and positively effect employment numbers, I'm wrecking this country?!!!
If there's one thing I can't fucking stand it's ignorance. There's no excuse for it and to hear that attitudes like this are still rife in so many parts of the country is not only upsetting but really disappointing.
Unfortunately I'm not so sure mass society will share my outrage just at the moment. In a climate where an entire ethnic group is being singled out for the actions of a few nutters, will most people really notice the long-term implications of associating these actions with a group of people who don't condone them or agree in any way with their views?
And - not that this is an excuse to single out another group for blame because nutters can come from anywhere - it's interesting to hear that at least one of the London bombers was from Jamaica. But as we all know, facts are relatively meaningless when perception can be spun into anything the media and government want.
Does anyone see what's going on or will it largely go unnoticed until it affects you personally. Until the day you find you can't buy a kebab at 2.30 on a Friday night because the hard-working Pakinstani who's served you every week without fail gets kicked out of England because he's "wrecking our country."
