Les Savy Fav-ulous

Thoroughly excellent gig from Les Savy Fav there on Saturday. Hadn't been in Crawdaddy, it's miniscule with a 350 capacity and stone walls for that underground feel. Nice strong A/C though. I was interrupted while waiting for the band to come on by a guy with a sheet over his head holding a candle in a glass and clinking a chain against it. I let him past and watched confusedly as he made his way to the front, before getting up on the stage. The penny dropped, it was the singer.

The bass player's bass was fucked up so the singer spent nearly 10 minutes talking shite to the crowd, though I'm sure he was wishing the bass player would hurry the hell up. Once the show got started, the excitement factor ramped up pretty fast. They kicked off with the Equestrian. Playing Scout's Honor second really killed us all, with its ridiculously loud trebley lead and screaming vocals, not to mention old skool vibe. I got a crick in my neck from headbanging and had to rock out by bending my knees. The music sound was absolutely top-notch, power punk at its best, though the vocals could have done with being louder.

The singer's penchant for antics was deserved, he kept coming into the crowd to fool around. There were also lots of moments where he'd pass the mic to a crowd member so we could sing. A girl who had the privilege during Scout's Honor couldn't handle the L.E.S.S.A.V.Y.F.A.V. bit though. He got a bloke up on the stage, stuck his finger through his fly Morrison-style, and got the bloke to suck it. One time he trailed a cable behind him and made his way up to the balcony, another time he got his shirt off and went through the audience kissing both men and women. Next he brought a bloke up onto the stage who was wearing a wolf mask so he could get him to howl for us, then the wolf crowd surfed as far as the balcony and pulled himself up onto it. The singer did the same trick, he suspended himself off the balcony to We'll Make A Lover Of You, and I thought he was going to drop off, so everyone stepped back - we certainly weren't catching him, with his fat sweaty naked body. He had to let himself down gently in the end. I looked back at the stage and the two guitarists were duetting on the mic for the song's amazing outro.

Best bit was afterwards when we (Me, Seamus, Niamh, and Seamus's friend from work) were in the beer garden and the band suddenly came through a barrier and stood right beside me. I was stoked beyond belief, my media whoredom is legendary. I asked the most intelligent questions that I could muster while sipping on my G+T.

Best gig of the year. Great fun.
