2011 has been a bad year for Doctor Who lovers.

Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who, has died aged only 63.

She first starred alongside Jon Pertwee (the 3rd Doctor), and later alongside Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor), and I think that period was probably some of the best Doctor Who of all time, with such iconic episodes as Planet of the Spiders, the amazing Genesis of the Daleks, and Seeds of Doom (hey, I liked it - "No touch pod, could be dangerous!").

Sarah Jane was probably the best companion the Doctor has ever had (except for Jamie McCrimmon), and voted most popular; she was certainly my wife's favourite character. She was punchy, and stood up for herself, she had a great on screen dynamic with Tom Baker, jokingly calling him "middle aged" when he was brooding about being 750 and still working for the Brigadier in Pyramids of Mars. Heck, she was introduced as a journalist who was infiltrating UNIT. And she only screamed when it was really necessary ;)

Elisabeth Sladen once said that she left the character of Sarah Jane Smith, but Sarah Jane Smith never left her.

RIP, Sarah Jane Smith.
