Thanks to Scott for posting this.
I don't necessarily agree on ALL points in this article but I did find it thought-provoking.
Cars are the new smoking?
http://www.squawkfox.com/2008/07/25/cars-are-the-new-smoking/ Point #6 hit me in the heart and gut.
As the child of a mom who smoked while pregnant with me, and a household where both parents smoked when I was very young, I've grown up with a disdain of inconsiderate and selfish smokers (doesn't apply to all smokers, some can do so without infringing on others). By extension, the habit itself is one I've just generally disliked, most especially when it imposes on those who want nothing to do with it.
It's only been in recent years that, in many places, non-smokers have not had to endure the atmospheric effects of others simply because to do so was the accepted societal standard.
Well, it's only fair that I would turn this microscope on myself and examine my own habits the same way. I am not above reproach, and I endeavor to apply the same standards of decency to myself as I do to others (if not even MORE so to myself).
Are my acts just a selfish and damaging?
Do my actions unnecessarily and inconsiderately affect the health and safety of non-drivers?
Is driving the new smoking?
Will our opinions about driving change over the next 50-60 years in a similar way as they have to smoking?
At least I drive a fuel-efficient car, but I can say I'm guilty of the fact that this month was the first time in years that I've owned/ridden a bicycle anywhere.
Thoughts?
