Lawnmower derby

Yesterday and today, my place of work, or rather the turf surrounding my place of work was assaulted by the annual test drive of lawnmowers. One of the bigger tool and equipment dealers in the state brings all sorts of push and riding mowers for the mow-happy male public to come and test.

Last year, on my way back from a supremely unsatisfying lunch date with my then soon-to-be ex, we had to stop by for him to give 'em a go. What an ass. At least the lawnmower salesman and I had a good chuckle.

Back in the old country, the only people with riding lawnmowers are golf courses, farmers, and the idle rich, who would never despoil their own behinds by climbing onto such a machine. Here, every jackass with a lawn has one. I especially enjoy watching the lords of the castle mow what passes for hills here. Every pass carries the exhaust tinged excitement of a trip to the emergency room.

I of course showed my own ignorance of the whole midwestern lawnmower culture upon hearing of lawnmower races and thinking "What, do they leap out of the blocks pushing the mower, and sprint behind them to the finish?"

Damn my poverty and common sense. I've missed out on so much.
