New Kindle Paperwhite: help needed for a newbie, pls

Oct 11, 2013 19:08

After a few days spent pondering about it, I finally decided to get myself an early Xmas present and bought the new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader! Here it is, in all its glory. Do you like it?

I chose the backlit version because I like to read in bed, but hubby hates it when I keep the light on, so now I can read in the dark without disturbing him. So far I've tried using my Samsung Galaxy S3, whose screen is really small, and Hubby's iPad, which is bigger but also quite heavy to hold, and its backlight strains my already tired eyes too much for reading comfortably, so I've finally decided to buy something more suitable to the task and not as bulky.

This is my first e-reader and I'm pretty excited about it. I'll only receive it on October 25th, but I would like to be prepared and get to know its many functions in advance. Are there some Kindle users among you who can give me some tips on how to use the device at best, especially when it comes to converting and uploading files to the device? Do you use Calibre (or another specific software) to convert the formats of the ebooks you own already, or do you only buy new stuff from Amazon and download it from the Cloud? Can you download fanfiction into the device? And PDF documents? Any kind of advice is most welcome, since I'm a complete newbie to the e-readers world. Thank youuuuuu!!!

P.S. - Any advice on where to buy a nice and not too expensive cover (possibly one that has to do with my fandoms) for my new baby? I don't want him to look all grey, ugly and boring, so a nice little 'dress' is in order. ;)
