You and me
We'll all go down in history
With a sad Statue of Liberty
And a generation that didn't agree

-System of a Down, Sad StatueThe new System of a Down CD, Mezmerize is sweeet. Definitely takes their sound to a new level. They've always had their bipolar ultra-hard grind followed by a really melodic groove but they turned it up a notch. The melodic parts are just so damn beautiful, moreso because they're punctuated with headbanging riffs and pounding drums.
I'm going to the Dresden Dolls show this Friday. Originally I thought it was weird that the band is just a pianist/singer and a drummer, but it's making more sense to me now. A lot of bands' creative juice comes from mainly from two people who just have the chemistry to write great fucking songs. With the Beatles it was John Lennon and Paul McCartney. With Metallica it's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. System of a Down is Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian. Not to demean the other members of those bands who are obviously very skilled musicians but those duos formed the heart of the bands that pumped out great songs. The Dresden Dolls just figured out that what they had was great and that adding anyone else just diluted their chemistry. Of all the songs on their album more than half have some additional instrumentation but aside from the string arrangement on Truce, I don't think any of it will really be missed from the live show.

Besides the whole "Mime Band" thing wouldn't work with a larger band. Who ever heard of a mime playing a guitar? That's just silly. So what if the mime plays piano and sings. A singing mime just makes a crazy kind of sense.
