I got an email today and when I read it, it made me a little bit sad. I decided that instead of looking at all the things that are bad about America and the things that would make it easy for anyone to want to not be proud of being an American citizen, that I would look at the things that make me proud and realize how fortunate I am to live in America.
I am proud to that I can say whatever I want about the government and even if I disagree with the majority there is someone somewhere that agrees with me and I can say it without fear of being punished by the government.
I am proud that as a voting citizen, I can make a difference in the things that I don't like in our government. I'm proud to live in a country that was founded on supporting the ideas of equality and supporting the "little guy" and helping the minority.
I am proud, even though I know that the ideals that our government was founded on aren't what we always see. At the same time I know that there will always be people fighting for what they know is right for everyone, not just their own wallets.
I am proud that, as a woman, I can own property, get married, go to school, have a job,be valued as a human being, and enjoy the other luxeries that are afforded to Americans that women all over the world can't even dream about.
I am proud that I can be the difference that needs to happen.
I am proud that it takes more than one branch of government to make important decisions. I am very proud that our founding fathers knew what they were doing when they constructed our government.
I am proud of living in a land where the government is for, of and by the people. [even if this isn't what it always feels or looks like.]
I am proud to be an American citizen because it means that I am not an Iraqi citizen and I don't have to live in fear everyday that my home might be destroyed by people bringing me peace.
I am proud that we have a military that doesn't have a manditory service requirement. I am proud that we can stand up against having to fight a war we don't believe in and that Canada is close enough if the draft is reinstated.
I am proud that I live in a country where our ideals are not forgotten. A country where I know they will be attained.
I am proud to know that America is a country where great change can happen and people can only remember discrimination because they heard it from an older person or learned it in a history class. In the end, all discrimination in the United States will be nothing but a scar on American history, always there but the pain of the memories will dwindle to nothing.
I am proud to be an American because I can practice or not practice whatever religion I deem appropriate for me. I am proud because I can believe in whatever G-d I choose and we have such a diverse range of beliefs in our country. I am glad that we can be who we are without having to pretend to be someone else to fit into a government plan for assimilation. Diversity is what makes our country great.
I am proud to be an American citizen, because the America that I was promised still remains a dream that I cherish with al of my heart and soul and that I will work to attain. I am proud because it will take great work of great people to see our dreams manifest into reality.
The nation that I currently live in is not the America that I would like it to be. But I am proud because despite how bad it can be at times, it is still better than some of the other choices. I am proud because I can post whatever I want on the Internet for others to see and realize that it is up to us, the fabulous young generation, to make America the country that we want and dream for it to be.
I am proud to be an American citizen.
