Hello Friends.
So the results of yesterday were not exactly what most of us had been hoping for. With the monkey being put back in the White House and the discriminatory proposal being put in our Constitution, it isn’t what I would consider a victory. But at this time, what I have been told is a “dark time in American and Gay History” we need to try and stay positive about the situation.
As far as proposal two is concerned, yes, it is really shitty that it has been passed. But at the same time, this is just one battle in the war for equal rights for the GLBT community. Now for me, this would be an easy time for me to give up as I already have the ability to get married but will I? No. Because I know that this is not right, I know that in my heart, that marriage is for those who love each other, not for those who hate. If you want to protect marriage, Mr. Bush and the rest of you right wing extremists, then you shouldn’t be married. You are destroying it by showing that it is okay to hate to protect an institution of love. Now is the time for us to continue the fight. When the other side is taking a break and celebrating that they have won, let’s sneak in and show them that they are wrong. Show them that we aren’t going to win this war, because that is what this is. This is a war for equal rights. So let’s fight, so we can win and show those conservative, right wing extremists what we are made of. Oh, and as a point of reference, this proposal, which is unconstitutional, there are 5 law suits currently against it and some people I know from HRC and the ACLU are meeting Friday to find a judicial way to defeat it.
As far as George W., I know that most of you know how I feel about him. I still feel that yes, he is an idiot without half of a functioning brain and yes, I am including the alleged brain of Dick Cheney. But at the same time, it is only another four years and in the grand scheme of things, that isn’t the end of the world. It’s no reason for us to give up or move out of the country. Let’s put it this way. Bush will more likely than not do a lot of damage to the country in the next four years, however, we still have so many more years left in our lives and so many more years to see good things happen from our country. So many people that I have seen today have told me that they want to move to Europe or Canada and while if that is what you want to do then I’m not going to stop you but at the same time, I have just one thought: how can things change if all the young people leave? If all of us who are fair minded and are working for a positive change in America, what good could come? We would be quitting on our country and more or less saying we have no hope that things will get better in the future. But things will get better because we will make them better.
I usually find it really funny when people feel compelled to remind me that, as a young person, I am the future. But this is my reminder for everyone today. Hey guys, this just in. We are the future. 20 years from now, who will be the old people in charge? Sad to say but yes friends, some day we will be those old people. We will be the ones who are making important decisions. So for now, we might not see the results that we want but there is no reason for us to give up on America now. That’s not how democracy works. If George Bush is right and the terrorists “hate us because they can’t stand our freedom,” then let’s make America look like the freedom we are supposed to have. Don’t quit. We don’t get anywhere by quitting.
Okay, so I want to leave you with a quote I got in my email today. Hopefully this will be uplifting and we can take some of this steam from being pissed off and turn it into something positive.
“Thank you for your hardwork in our fight for equality. No one moment, no one setback determines the final outcome. This defeat hurts a lot but the question of full equality is not an “if” it is a “when”. You know that and we will persevere.“
