I started wearing glasses when I was four. Yep, FOUR.
And I had pretty shocking vision from day one. I get to blame my dad for this, his vision is pretty much exactly the same as mine-- the whole -10 with astigmatism same. This meant that my glasses always tended to be much more expensive than most glasses. (my last pair I bought about 5 years

As far as I'm concerned, the greatest invention ever is that super-thin glass. When I was nine I wanted wire-rimmed glasses (had been wearing glasses since just-barely-five) and my eye doctor told me that not only could I not get them, I would never be able to get them because my vision was so bad that my glasses would always be way too thick. I've had wire-rimmed glasses for about ten years now, thanks to that 75%-thinner glass substitute they have now. Someday I may even get the rimless kind. (And I know that plastic frames are back in style now, but I just can't get over the trauma.)
But yeah, I always scratched my "scratch-proof" ones too. Though not intentionally.

And the only reason I'm without glasses now is cause of the ICL I had surgically implanted in my right eye last year.. for $4,000 -- there's no way I could have afforded both, even if my left eye was in good enough health :S
It's really not an easy thing to grow up with and have to deal with each day..

If my vision stabilizes I'd think about Lasik (nearly everyone out here has had it), but the odds of getting 20/20 vision aren't great (especially given how bad my vision is currently) and I can't see the appeal of ending up with worse vision than I have with my contacts.
BTW the edge of my (75% thinner) glasses is 3/8". I don't even want to imagine the full-glass ones!
