Yesterday was my last skating lesson before September. Yes, once again, the rink closes for the summer, and it makes me so sad. After I came home from the lesson, I wrote all the tips Carina gave me in a notebook so I could take them with me when I go skating in Springfield, the only ice arena that's open during the summer in the area. And that's still 2 hours away. The advice she gave me appears to work as Sandy stopped by and told us how she'd seen Carina's impact on me as she happened to see me doing a flip. She said it was higher and nicer than usual. It really hurts to have to stop now when I was on the right path. I also saw Alison who came to help out Nikki a little, as she was testing (and she passed!). Alison may have "senioritis" as Sandy calls it, as she has taken a lot of distance from everybody in the past few weeks. It was quite upsetting for me as she missed a couple of planned lessons, arrived late all the time, and didn't answer my e-mails. But she seems fine, and I don't think she minded me having a lesson with Carina.
I forgot to mention last week that during the riding lesson Cat had me do posting trot without stirrups. I thought I would be very sore, but I was just a little (not enough to notice it everyday, but one in a while my thighs reminded me).
Saturday we babysat most of the day. It kept me away from work, but it was fun to be with Josh and Kevin (5 and a half) and Cedrik (15 months). And again Zsuzsanna gave us way too much money for the job, but I'm not really complaining. That night, we saw them all again at Prof. Hadley's retirement party. It was a potluck dinner, and yummy food was had. Josh and I made a tarte au fromage that received much praise. Then later Josh realized that this was the last French Dept. party that Joe and Frédérique would attend, as they are leaving for Colorado this summer. Joe is in a way Josh's counterpart. He's an American married to a French Ph.D. students, and he likes baseball and science. So they basically hang out together at those parties, and I must say I like to be around them, even if they talk about things that don't interest me. I really don't have much in common with other students from the Dept. besides Frédé, and I'm also sorry I won't have her at parties anymore. It also fun to see Josh actually enjoying himself at those events. It makes me laugh when they figure out together the little scientific details behind what they see, like that heating lamp thingie at Prof. Kibbee's house. Or when they discuss probabilities. They really are nerdy in a good way.
Here's another goose picture. These two don't get along so well.
