two fails and a win

Without much commentary:

Fail 1: RaceFail strikes back, and this time it's got Lois McMaster Bujold involved. More at the epic collection of links here, but a quick summary is that various people thought that the best response to people of colour saying "Actually, yeah, I find this problematic and maybe you could think about whether or not this is hurting people in various ways" was "Fuck you, you don't count anyway, and also DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO".

I don't know... I'm a ridiculously white girl with no special knowledge or anything. I'm certainly not in any place where I could justify getting on my high horse. I just wanted to put out there that as a huge, huge fan of sci-fi and fantasy, I do think it counts that people are saying they hurt. And I definitely think that even if the hurt is imagined, or exaggerated (which there's no reason to believe is the case), the right response to that is more like "Okay then, what can we do about that?"

Because dammit, I love my genre fiction, and I love a bunch of people who love it too and feel excluded by this rubbish. Accident or misunderstood or whatever: it doesn't matter, because if we're going to get to a place where everyone feels okay playing in the sandpit, then could people please stop throwing the sand around? If people get enough of it in their eyes, then of course they're going to leave and find somewhere more fun.

Fail 2: a really beautiful post about how gay ministers are totally like NAZIS omg.

Win: It's Stephen Colbert's birthday! I had forgotten til I got home, but it is, and in the spirit of that awesome I present one of my favourite latest bits, hee.
