... in which dreams are solid, words are fire

I spent a WEEKEND OF GAY at connotations! I didn't post about it last time I went because I, um, sensibly arranged to move house the day after a con, but this time I didn't. So, uh, con report. :D

I was lucky to spend most of the con with the Super Team of entropical87 (who I had never met before, but who is ADORABLE AND AWESOME, omg), airinshaw, tellitslant (who was the Token Femmeslasher and also official outside academic investigator, which amused me vastly), and also OH MY GOD catwalksalone, who I 1. didn't know was going and 2. who I have wanted to talk to for AGES, and yet who didn't run away screaming when I did the 'OMG!!! I am TOTALLY MEETING YOU!! OMG COOL!' thing at her. Instead there was a surprising amount of Sports Night love on top of the expected geekiness, and this made me very happy. Especially as we could retreat to it whenever there was discussing of fandoms we didn't know, which is quite common, omg.

So, some of the things Wot I Did And Saw This Weekend:

- A combination of friend-induced talking and work-induced knackeredness meant I missed panels on the first day, which possibly means I suck, but did mean I could con the next day without actually passing out on anybody, w00t.

- Um, I rather suspect the whole con thought of us as the degenerates in the back row, which in fandom is rather impressive. We suspect the parents of the small children who escaped into the bar and heard us singing along to a medly of eighties hits and talking about porn particularly appreciated it, heh, so apologies to whoever we maybe appalled (and catwalksalone's brother ;) ), and also: \o/ *is proud!*

- The 'Shared universes and etiquette' panel just made me think of how I met therealjae through fangirling her profusely, and tellitslant mocked me for it.

- The Metafandom panel had some stuff on the necessity and ubiquity of jargon that made me decide to be very, very careful in future about defining my terms for everything ever.

- I really, really love that at cons, you can just say "Hi! What are you geeking about?" and the person will tell you and it's all coolness. Also, that about half the new friends made are met when you walk past somebody and hear them saying, like, "Rodney's cock!" or "Stephen Colbert!" or whatever, and you have to turn round and tell them how awesome it is that you walked past somebody saying that.

- The 'Boys Playing Too?' panel surprised me a lot, because I was expecting to go in and start talking about how it is totally not necessary that we bend over backwards to let men run fandom because dammit, female space is nice. Men have most of the rest of the world! Instead it mostly turned into a discussion about why fandom, and particularly slash-centered fandom, is so female dominated, and how we can make sure that that doesn't equal being hugely rude and horrible to the men who are in said fandom.

- 'Angst or Romance?' we all summed up by yelling BOTH! simultaneously.

- morganmuffle and her friend were very sweet and awesome and I wish I talked to them more. The same is true of several other people.

- The Moderately Tidy Dinner was actually touching, rather than just a fest of crack. Aww. We love the con organisers, yes we do. (I especially loved the 'I Heart Chthulu' shirt.)

- VID SHOW HAPPENED! I was gleeful! Yay! More vids next year, omg! The Tremors vid was particularly hilarious, and the whole thing was generally an awesome addition to our tiny cuddly convention.

- Uh, then we got drunk and watched Strangers with Candy (HURRAH other people who end up liking it too!) and also Persuaders omg and then Kung Fu - Enter the Fist which was a WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL OF WRONG oh my Lord. Hee. Then I drunkenly ended up explaining my views on Doctor Who and domestic violence (um, seperate topics, thankfully) to poor tellitslant.

- The 'We're Not Gay We Just Love Each Other' panel I thought was particularly awesome and had an interesting and polite discussion about stuff that at a lot of places would cause lots of angry bitching. I particularly appreciated that there was pointing out of the potential badness in trying to deny a gay aspect to characters who are shagging characters of the same gender, but without being too judgey or whatever to discuss WHY that might be something that appeals to certain aspects of fandom. w00t.

- I can't tell you what the next big conflict will be, because if I do, catwalksalone will kill me. :)

- Insane crossovers that work make me ridiculously happy. I have so many things from that panel that just made me go DUDE HOW MUCH DO I LOVE FANS. Hee. I can't remember what crazed crossovers I said I would link to, though, so if anyone does, please feel free to tell me. :)

- Things That Annoy Me was an awesomely fun panel to finish with, as usual. Hee.

- And then I PIMPED PERSUADERS, omg. I don't know how well I did, but I love that show to the power of ohmygodohmygod, and I think I managed to get at least some of that across. If nothing else, I think I managed to persuade (hah!) at least some people that it is the most... purely love-filled show or books I've ever seen. And the other pimpings were fun as always; I was particularly inrigued by the gay mystery series and The State Within, both of which sound right up my alley. (This is the major problem with the pimpage: TOO MANY NEW FANDOMS OMG. And it always makes me want to read fic for all my old fandoms, too.)

And then, as usual, I had to leave before all the raffle prizes were out, woes, and I think I left my Persuaders pimping disc behind. Cause i r smrt. And also i r tired so I might sleep now. But YAY for Connotations. :)
