OKAY LETS SEE IF I CAN DO THIS

So, as you might have noticed, when it comes to human emotions Kira acts on a weirdly sort of sociopathic level. He is very capable of feeling stuff like love, obviously, but he really only does in select situations. Beyond that? The reason he can figure things out that cuts down to the core is because he's observant but not empathic. And this is... 95.9% of what Katou gets.

The REASON Kira has put up with, helped out and abused Katou long enough to call him 'friend' is entirely because Katou never once found the self esteem to leave for his own good. Oh, there might have been a time when Katou fucked himself over pretty bad and ran away in which case Kira probably tracked him down, kicked his ass and fixed him up. But if Katou had ever gone "Hey I'm too good for this shit" Kira wouldn't have even blinked, much less made an effort to stop him. \o/ SO HE'S A LOUSY FRIEND REALLY.

But Katou is hilariously leechy in his own way and Kira is seriously incapable of forcing anyone out of his emotional bubble

UH ANYWAY. As far as you know OPINIONS. Kira likes Katou, he really does. He thinks he's funny, he likes teasing him, he was genuinely pleased Katou was alive again, but not on a personal level just more a 'good for you but that doesn't really affect me' thing. It's REALLY SAD TO SAY but the closest way I can really equate it IS as a pet. Kira doesn't ACTUALLY think of himself as Katou's owner, but he does feel a certain sense of responsibility for him, a certain desire to see him healthy and happy, and a certain detachment knowing that nothing will change for him if one day that puppy never comes home

Kira is... honestly? Katou sees Kira as another addiction. He knows his relationship with Kira isn't healthy just in the way he knew that his drugs weren't healthy, but he can't bring himself to shake him. Katou is obsessed with Kira and that obsession gave root to love-- which he knows Kira's never going to return, because it's Kira.

I couldn't really tell you WHEN Katou started obsessing over Kira, but it was probably pretty soon after they first met. Originally, it was a "who the fuck is this guy and how the hell did he beat me up so quickly" type of thing that turned into admiration that turned into following him around like a puppy. Kira was just really different from anyone Katou had ever met. And, disturbingly enough, that difference--and the attraction that stemmed from it--was that Kira didn't give a shit about Katou.All his life, Katou had been bounced from one extreme to another. His father hated him. His sister tried to hard to love him. His mother fluctuated between the two

So... Katou loves Kira. He knows Kira isn't ever going to love him back. Originally he thought this was because Kira was in love with Setsuna, and it broke him a little more every time Kira ditched him to spend time with Setsuna instead. Whiiich is why we get Rociel being able to use him against Setsuna so easily BUT ANYWAY. Katou know knows that there's more to it than just the Setsuna thing, and a big part of it is the fact that Kira's Lucifer and not human. Does that change his feelings? Not really. He already knew he was sort of doomed on the love front, so being in love with the DEVIL HIMSELF just strikes him as fitting.

Basically, he just enjoys being around Kira and every little bit of attention Kira throws his way. It's validating in a different way than Setsuna's friendship and kindness is, and he knows that Setsuna's the better kind of validation, but Kira's treatment of him is just as important. He's fully aware of how pathetic that is, too.

As long as Kira lets him tag along after him, he'll be happy.
