Sometimes he feels like a trainee all over again. It's conflicting. He anticipates being on stage, where he can show everyone his best. And he cries himself to sleep, because his mistakes have caught up to him and he knows that it's not possible.
She was the first one he called when he decided to leave. The only one he thought of calling. He apologized, a bumbling mess as he struggled through the words. She always said the right things ("It's okay. I understand.") when he always said the wrong things ("I have to leave. I can't do this."), it was something he was used to.
He couldn't call her again after that, he couldn't find the strength to, so most days he just thought about her. It drove him crazy, and instead he busied himself with bboying, his passion, and he managed to get a part-time job. Within time, she'd forget him and move on. Maybe it was just better if that happened, it would make things easier. But it didn't.
Sometimes she called him, but as usual she'd leave curt sharp messages ("Pick up your phone or I'll kill you.") until suddenly those messages turned softer, more real ("I hope you're doing okay. I miss you.") and they would never stop. She never stopped. He wasn't sure if he could take it.
So today, as he stares blankly at his phone, he decides to answer it. With a small timid voice, one that lets her hear the aching defenseless self he's become without her. It must be at least three in the morning over there, he notes, as her voice sounds tired and quiet, but still one that he loves hearing.
They make small talk, both avoiding the real issue (them, of course: Jay and Jessica, Jessica and Jay) until silence creeps into the conversation. He isn't sure what to say and he hears her sigh, the one she uses when he knows she's going to say something she's been thinking this whole time.
"You'll come back, Jay. I'll wait."
And right now, that's all he needs. (He always believes everything she says.)
