Which cliché rings true to you?
Most writers try to avoid usin' clichés. They think that clichés are over-used and lackin' in original thought. And that the expressions have lost their meanin' or power. Such as dead as a door nail. It's been used so much, the sayin' has lost it's impact.
Yet I'm not one of those elitist writers. I like clichés. Like a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It is used by many a romantic bloke to put into words how he feels. Even if a million others feel the same way, the sayin' is just as meaningful and true today, as it was centuries ago. Shakespeare was a master of coined words. The ability to create sayings that are hard to forget. And like the poet in me would say. If its good enough for old William Shakespeare, its good enough for me.
Anyway, back on topic. The best clichés capture what is true, and sums it up in a simple to understand way. Here are clichés that ring true to yours truly. Absolute power does corrupt absolutely. Actions do speak louder than words. All work and no play, does make Spike a dull boy. Alls fair in love and war. An idle mind is the devil's playground. And an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
So yeah, many a cliché rings true to me. Some are over-used. But if a sayin' isn't any good, then it will go the way of the dodo. But long as I'm around. I'll always use the occasional cliché, euphemism, figure of speech, or idiom. That's just the way I am. And that's the way I'm gonna stay. Cause like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And I'm not just sayin' it cause I came up with many of the clichés blokes use these days. Or maybe I am.
